Kim Reynolds ordered all flags in Iowa to be lowered to half-staff from sunrise on Saturday, December 14, 2024, to sunset on Sunday, December 15, 2024, in honor and remembrance of former Congressman Jim Leach. He passed away on December 11, 2024, at the age of 82. Leach served Iowa in Congress for 30 years from 1977 to 2007.
“Jim Leach served the state of Iowa and his country with distinction for three decades,” Gov. Reynolds said. “He embodied the soul of a civil servant as he dedicated his life to public service. Kevin and I are saddened at his passing, and our prayers are with his family at this difficult time.”
Flags will be at half-staff on the State Capitol Building and on flag displays in the Capitol Complex. Flags will also be at half-staff on all public buildings, grounds and facilities throughout the state.
Individuals, businesses, schools, municipalities, counties and other government subdivisions are encouraged to fly the flag at half-staff for the same length of time as a sign of respect.
