From: Montana Governor Greg GianforteTHREE FORKS, Mont. – During a ceremony in Three Forks, Governor Greg Gianforte this week recognized Sergeant Major Sean Gifford as a recipient of the 2023 Montana Governor’s Veteran Commendation.
“Giving back and serving our neighbors is part of who we are as Montanans,” Gov. Gianforte said. “It’s an honor to recognize Sergeant Major Gifford as an exceptional member of the Three Forks community and as a veteran who embodies the values and commitment to service that define our state and way of life.”
Visiting with SGT MAJ Gifford, his friends, and family, the governor recognized him for his service in the United States Army and to his community after returning home.
Even after serving our country as a Green Beret for 21 years, earning a Purple Heart, and being wounded in combat, Gifford returned home to continue his service to Montana, first as a police officer, then as Gallatin County Sheriff Deputy, and most recently as mayor of Three Forks.
During the ceremony, the governor also highlighted Gifford’s work as a volunteer with Warriors for Quiet Waters, a Bozeman-based non-profit that provides fly fishing and hunting experiences to veterans who served our nation.
The governor presented him with a Montana State Flag flown over the State Capitol in his honor and letters thanking him for dedicating his life of service to country and community.
Thanking the governor for his award and highlighting the strong support of the community, Gifford said, “I’m humbled and honored by this award, but the true honor was the ability to serve and protect our country and my local community with some of the finest men and women I know.”
The Montana Governor’s Veteran Commendation recognizes outstanding Montana veterans who have selflessly served our country in uniform and made a positive impact in their community. 31 veterans received the award in 2021 and 51 veterans received the award in 2022.
39 recipients of the 2023 Montana Governor’s Veteran Commendation will be honored this year with an award ceremony.
