From: Maine Governor Janet MillsGovernor Janet Mills announced today that she will deliver her State of the Budget Address to a Joint Convention of the Legislature in the House Chamber on Tuesday, January 28, 2025 at 7:00 p.m.
The Governor was invited to deliver her Address by the Legislature's Presiding Officers, Senate President Mattie Daughtry and Speaker of the House Ryan Fecteau. A copy of their invitation can be found here (PDF). Governor Mills' acceptance letter can be found here (PDF).
In her remarks, Governor Mills will discuss the difficult choices behind her biennial budget proposal, which includes a balance of investments, programmatic changes, spending reductions, and targeted revenue enhancements to balance the state budget -- as required by the Maine Constitution -- while maintaining core commitments to Maine people.
Those core commitments to Maine people include health care, 55 percent of education, free school meals, and five percent municipal revenue sharing to stabilize property taxes and support municipal services. It also proposes making permanent the Governor's highly successful Free Community College initiative.
"I know that each of you share my commitment to preserving key programs and services that Maine people count on and to enacting a fiscally responsible biennial budget proposal," wrote Governor Mills in her acceptance letter. "I look forward to addressing the Joint Convention of the Legislature, and I am confident that -- as we have done before -- Republicans, Democrats, and Independents can come together to do what is right for Maine people."
The Governor's Office will release additional logistical information about the State of the Budget Address in the days prior.
