From: Colorado Governor Jared Polis

SANTA FE, NM - Governor Polis is joining his fellow Western governors for the Western Governors' Association summer meeting in Santa Fe, New Mexico to discuss western policy issues and collaborate on solutions.

“Western governors have the unique ability to come together and get things done. The West faces a variety of issues from dealing with wildfires and natural disasters, to managing our incredible public lands, pursuing low-cost renewable energy options and more. During this meeting we are discussing some of the issues that matter most to Coloradans, including housing, education, agriculture and wildfire mitigation - issues we are delivering on for Coloradans. While we may not agree on every issue, we still manage to find a way to learn from each other to better support the people we serve,” said Governor Jared Polis.

In 2023, as chair of the Western Governors' Association, Governor Polis launched The Heat Beneath Our Feet initiative, focused on expanding geothermal energy research and exploration. This low-cost clean energy resource is largely untapped, despite the amount of it found across the West, providing a unique opportunity for the region to lead the nation and the world in developing this renewable energy source.

To kick off the summer meeting, Governor Polis will moderate a session focused on collaboration between the state and federal government to strengthen career pathways and prepare all students for good-paying jobs includingU.S. Department of Education Secretary Linda McMahon.

As Chair of the bipartisan National Governors Association, Governor Polis launched the Let’s Get Ready: Educating All Americans For Success initiative, which is focused on real solutions to ensure that students gain the skills needed to succeed in the classroom and beyond.

Governor Polis will then join a roundtable discussion on housing solutions and increasing the supply of housing people can afford. During this session, Governor Polis will highlight Colorado’s leadership in breaking down barriers to housing to increase housing supply and reduce costs. Over the last two years, Governor Polis has signed new laws to increase housing near transit, eliminate costly parking requirements and discriminatory occupancy limits, allow Coloradans to build accessory dwelling units on their property, break down barriers to more condos being built, increase the use of modular housing, and allow for more smart-stair buildings in Colorado.

Governor Polis will also participate in discussions about ways to bolster agricultural production in Colorado across the western states, increasing accessibility in the outdoors, land management opportunities and conservation efforts, wildfire mitigation, forestry workforce development, rural health care and more.

White House Cabinet members U.S. Department of Agriculture Secretary Rollins, Department of the Interior Secretary Doug Burgam, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Administrator, Lee Zeldin, and Secretary of Labor Lori Chavez-DeRemer will also be joining for discussions with the governors.
