The Carnegie Foundation Visits GCS - Guilford County Schools (GCS) will host the Carnegie Foundation Learning Leadership Network (Carnegie LLN) on October 10-12. The aim of this network of district leadership teams is to support, showcase, and study school districts that are creating engaging, equitable, and effective learning experiences for their secondary students. Network members convene over the course of the school year to imagine and learn together how school districts can be set up to enable student learning both within and outside of the school walls.

Guilford County Schools was selected as the host for this fall’s site visit because of the innovative models housed in their Signature Career Academies and elementary school telehealth clinics. Carnegie LLN district teams will have the opportunity to conduct school site visits, learn from GCS district cabinet members about stakeholder engagement efforts in the development of the district’s Better Together strategic direction focus areas and priorities, and engage with a panel of local industry and community leaders, including Cone Health, Action Greensboro, Toyota and others. Network members will also share reflections, offer feedback, and apply what they’ve learned to their own system transformation work.

Members of the Carnegie Foundation will be available for interviews about their visit between 7:30 a.m. and 11:15 a.m. at the International Civil Rights Museum.

Friday, October 13

Millis Men – Millis Road Elementary will host its monthly session on male empowerment. Started by the school’s assistant principal, the program is an effort to provide a positive male influence on young men and expose them to community service. Each month is dedicated to a specific character trait or pillar related to social-emotional learning. Guest speakers are invited to discuss certain topics, the group also has outings that allow them to observe positive male role models and encourage them to be leaders. The session is from 2:45 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.

Lunch and Learn - The Guilford County Schools CTE department has arranged a series of lunch and learn sessions to expose elementary school students to careers in advanced manufacturing. Core Technology, a locally owned plastic manufacturer that provides products for HAECO, BMW, Rubbermaid, Volvo Trucks and other companies will host students from several different schools throughout the month to show students around the facility, answer questions and provide information on the advanced manufacturing industry. The first group of students to attend a lunch and learn session will arrive from Simkins Elementary at 10:00 a.m.

Suicide Prevention Awareness – The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention Triad Jr. Committee at the Early/Middle College at GTCC Jamestown will have a table set up during lunch to educate teens on campus about suicide prevention, mental health and service to others. The group will also raise money for the Triad Out of the Darkness walk which will be held on Saturday, October 14th from 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. at Triad Park in Kernersville.

Fall Festival – Sternberger Elementary will hold its annual fall carnival. Families can purchase wristbands to participate in fun activities and games, win prizes and raise money for the school. The festival is from 5:30 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.

Wednesday, October 18

Unity Day – Unity Day is the signature event of National Bullying Prevention Awareness Month. Students, staff and other GCS employees will wear orange. Here are a few newsworthy events happening.

 - Unity Day Pledge – GCS employees at the Franklin Blvd. office will wear orange and sign a pledge to stand up to bullying.
 - Unity Day Parade – Falkener Elementary will hold a schoolwide Unity Day parade at 9:00 a.m. All students will unite against bullying by wearing orange. Once class per grade level will lead the Unity Day parade through each hall of the school while students and staff stand outside of their classroom and cheer them on. To close the parade, all students will take the Unity Day Pledge.

Hispanic Heritage Concert – The Ragsdale High School Choir will observe Hispanic Heritage Month for its first concert of the school year. Students will sing songs that honor different cultures and range across different genres. Light refreshments will be served after the event.  The concert is free to the community and will be held in the school’s auditorium at 6:30 p.m.

Thursday, October 19

One-stop Pop-Up – GCS staff will meet seniors at the High Point Library to assist them with registering for their FSA ID (Federal Student Aid ID,) the number needed to fill out their FAFSA application. The one-stop shop will be open from 6:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.

Notes for Notes - Guilford County Schools (GCS) is the home of one of the first in-house recording studios in the country. The district partnered with the nonprofit Notes for Notes to create the organization’s first recording studio in a public school in the United States. The studio provides opportunities for students to record their own music and learn skills that can prepare them for futures in the entertainment industry. The space is free and serves as a model for the future of arts education in a public school system.
