The formal attendance zones for Hampton Elementary and Peeler Open Elementary have been updated to reflect changes made following the 2018 tornado that destroyed both schools, along with Erwin Montessori, which has a district-wide attendance zone.

At the time of the devastating April tornado, students at the affected schools were relocated to other district schools with space available. Since then, Peeler Open Elementary students have attended Bluford STEM Academy. In future years, students zoned for Hampton Elementary could choose to continue at Reedy Fork Elementary or to attend Falkener Elementary, Simkins Elementary or other schools, depending on their specific addresses. Hampton Elementary was officially closed in May 2019.

The board’s decision will keep the updated boundaries in place. The Peeler Open Elementary area will be rezoned to Bluford STEM Academy, and the Hampton Elementary area will be divided between Falkener Elementary and Simkins Elementary. This does not change the school for any students who currently live in the Hampton Elementary zone.

Also, at Tuesday’s meeting, the board agreed to transfer the former Hampton Elementary property to the City of Greensboro. In a letter to the district, the city declared its intent to use the property to support community needs, which could include converting it to park space, trails or community facilities. GCS declared the property as surplus in June 2022. The Board of County Commissioners, which has the option to purchase any district property before other bids are considered, declined the opportunity to purchase in December 2022.
