Guilford County Schools to Host Ribbon Cutting for Sylvia Mendez Newcomers School

WHAT: Guilford County Schools will host a ribbon cutting for the Sylvia Mendez Newcomers School. The school is the first named after a Latina person in North Carolina and the second of its kind in the state.

Sylvia Mendez is a civil rights pioneer. At age eight, she played an instrumental role in the Mendez v. Westminster federal case, which ruled that school segregation of Hispanic children was unconstitutional. This case paved the way for the landmark Supreme Court case Brown v. Board of Education.

The Sylvia Mendez Newcomers School is for third through eleventh-grade students who live in and around High Point and are new to the United States. Students will attend the Newcomers school for one year before transitioning to a traditional or choice school.

Sylvia Mendez and her family will join school, county and state leaders as the district cuts the ribbon and tours the new school.

Las Escuelas del Condado de Guilford organizarán el corte de cinta de la escuela Sylvia Méndez Newcomers.

QUE PASA: Las Escuelas del Condado de Guilford organizarán un corte de cinta para la inauguracion de la  Escuela Sylvia Méndez Newcomers. Esta escuela es la primera que llevara el nombre de una persona latina en Carolina del Norte y la segunda de su tipo en el estado.

Sylvia Méndez es una pionera de los derechos civiles. A los ocho años, desempeñó un papel fundamental en el caso federal Méndez contra Westminster, que dictaminó que la segregación escolar de los niños hispanos era inconstitucional. Este caso allanó el camino para el caso histórico de la Corte Suprema Brown contra la Junta de Educación.

La Escuela Sylvia Mendez Newcomers es para estudiantes del grado 3 al 11 y que vivan en High Point o sus alrededores y que sean nuevos en los Estados Unidos. Los estudiantes asistirán a la escuela SM Newcomers durante un año antes de realizar la transición a la escuela regular de su zona escolar.

Sylvia Méndez y su familia se unirán a los líderes,del distrito del condado,y del estado  para cortar la cinta y recorrer las instalaciones de la nueva escuela.
