6:00 PM-8:00 PM: Joe Farnsworth "Time To Swing" With Sarah Hanahan
Joe Farnsworth's drumming is the epitome of solid, swinging time-keeping, played with a light touch while maintaining a powerful groove. He's got chops to spare, but seems uninterested in offering bravura flourishes; his big solo here, the six-minute "One For Jimmy Cobb," is more concerned with musical narrative than technical flash. Moreover, his command of mainstream style is so complete that it hardly matters whether the tune is a churchy stomp like "Down By The Riverside" or a classic ballad like "The Star-Crossed Lovers," because the music always has the feel-good pulse listeners expect from straight-ahead jazz.
For his latest album as a leader, Farnsworth has put together something of an all-star quartet. Where much of his discography found him playing with the late Harold Mabern, this session puts Kenny Barron at the piano bench, whose authoritative touch brings a suitably quirky feel to the phrasing of "Monk's Dream" and provides plenty of drive to his own "Lemuria." Wynton Marsalis, who's used Farnsworth on several of his own albums, turns up on four tracks, his burnished tone and vocalized half-valve work bringing soul and wit to "Darn That Dream," while his muted horn burns white-hot on "Hesitation," driven by Farnsworth's classic, bop-schooled cymbal work. As for Peter Washington, his triplet-spiked bass lines and rich, dark tone perfectly complement Farnsworth's playing, matching it in both understated virtuosity and irresistible groove.

Eric McPherson:
Born and raised in New York, Eric McPherson was immersed in music from birth on Richard Davis, his godfather and an icon among jazz bassists, was present at his birth. It was Richard who suggested he be named after Eric Dolphy. Before Eric was three months old, his mother, a superb dancer-choreographer deep in the jazz scene, was taking him, strapped to her back, to rehearsals and performances. Her wide orbit of friends included lots of drummers, and major jazz artists like Max Roach, Michael Carvin, Charles Moffett, and Freddie Waits. Small wonder that Eric was beating on pots and pans before he could walk. At three, he told Elvin Jones, another household friend, that he was definitely going to be a drummer.

His unique and compelling voice on the instrument - the result of a patient and painstaking confrontation with the fundamentals of the art - has earned Allen years of critical attention signaling his ascension to the upper ranks of the contemporary jazz world. Originally from Detroit, Allen's apprenticeship, anchored by his lengthy tenure with Betty Carter, occurred largely in New York, where he worked with legends Lester Bowie, George Cables, Ron Carter, Louis Hayes, Frank Foster Big Band, Winard Harper, Dave Douglas, Cindy Blackman, Butch Morris, David Murray, Wallace Roney, Rufus Reid, and Geri Allen. In 2008, Allen began an association with Sunnyside Records to record his brand new trio, coined "the three-headed monster" (Burning Ambulance), for I AM - I AM, featuring Gregg August (bass) and Rudy Royston (drums). The album garnered rave reviews from the New York Times (Ben Ratliff's Playlist), Time Out NY (music cover), All About Jazz, Jazzman, Jazz Wise, and Downbeat Magazines. Allen also appeared on NPR's Jazz Perspectives, WNYC's Soundcheck, and WKCR's Musician's Show. Allen was also named "Rising Star" in DownBeat's 2011 Critics Poll as well as a finalist in 2010, 2009, and 2008 polls.
