NEVER IN LIEU OF FLOWERS: BOTANICAL SCULPTURE BY GINNIE PETERSON

The use of white is intentional in Never In Lieu of Flowers. Like a single note held in a minor key, it deepens the connection to the meaning of the work. While color, lights, and the use of resin, in the Deconstructed Botanicals, extend the language. Much of the joy of flowers is witnessing their life span. A tulip, for example, brings us hope as it pushes from the earth, continues to grow and extend its beauty after it is cut and even the faded fall of petals reminds of the passage of time.

Ginnie Peterson constructs the Never in Lieu of Flowers and Deconstructed Botanicals sculptures from plaster, natural materials, stoneware, resin, steel and lights. For the white series, Peterson formulates mixes with Hydrocal (white gypsum cement) or plaster and liquid polymers to coat objects. She also makes many of her own containers from stoneware. In the later work Ginnie builds on steel armatures that she has welded for this series. She makes silicone molds from actual flowers and leaves then casts them with pigmented resin. She amasses materials then works intuitively, selecting from an inventory of materials, paying attention to shapes and relationships, conscious of how the cast of light affects the pieces or how the added light moves. 

THE MODERN CAPE

In The Modern Cape, artists Josh Wald, Jiyoung Park, and Jeremy Wagner write a ‘love letter’ to Cape Cod. The exhibition marries the old and new, a virtual dance with history, a history being written in present time. The three artists will showcase their use of proprietary painting techniques as they demonstrate possible pathways to the evolution of the Cape Cod painting style. Their work is both a salute to the traditional style that historically comes from this area, as well as an embrace of the future. The modern take on this traditional style will be of interest to traditionalists as well as modern enthusiasts of younger generations.

SOURCED FROM THE SEA: IMPRESSIONS BY STEPHANE KING

Artist Stephanie King’s work of mixed media and botanical illustrations containing real seaweed and botanical pressings. The works in this series offer both a realistic and whimsical assemblage of time and place. Stephanie takes a Victorian tradition of seaweed pressing into the future with modern shapes and ideas while pushing traditional boundaries and approaches. Stephanie focuses on creating natural abstractions through material exploration, drawing inspiration from the colors, patterns and textures found within the seascape. Each design strikes a balance between experimentation and refinement.

Pressing seaweeds and botanicals offers Stephanie unlimited inspiration, peace, joy and hope. Working with a ‘wet medium’ has helped her surrender to the flow and learn to embrace the constant changing tides of life in all of its rhythmic cycles. Each piece of art is transformed into a piece of natural history; a unique fingerprint created from the specific seaside environment where its raw materials were collected. Stephanie is endlessly fascinated by the beauty and complexity of seaweed and botanicals in their natural environments. Along with being used as an art medium, seaweeds are important ecological resources, producing oxygen while absorbing carbon dioxide in marine environments and play a major role in the maintenance of the earth’s ecosystem.

FEBRUARY BREAK PROGRAMS

SURPRISE MIRROR PRINTING WORKSHOP FOR KIDS

(AGES 5 & UP)

February 18, 2025

9:00 am - 10:30 am

$20 per child

Come use your imagination to experiment with pencils, ink, and brayer rollers. We will have fun creating surprise images with mono prints. Develop your design, prepare a hard surface with thin layers of ink, and transfer your unique mirror image onto paper or fabric. Kids will each print their own series of never seen before images to bring home.

Experienced educator Carol DiCristina will engage the group as we explore the exhibit and learn about messy ways artists use ink and paint on Cape Cod.

UNDER THE SEA COLLAGE WORKSHOP FOR KIDS

Come experiment with watercolor, tissue, glue, and more to create your own under the sea collage to bring home. What is it like to be a plant living under the sea? We will talk about how seaweed thrives, and how these versatile plants have been used since Victorian times. Together we will have fun exploring the exhibit and creating seaweed scenes that still look wet after they are dry!

Experienced educator Carol DiCristina will engage the group as we combine history and art to explore cause and effect.
