History Was Made at the First-Ever Chinatown Ross Alley Zine Festival

From: Chinese Culture Center of San Francisco

On November 9th, we transformed Ross Alley into a vibrant celebration of resistance, creativity, and community power. Over 4,000 people gathered in this historic alley, marking a powerful milestone as BIPOC and queer artists claimed space and shared stories.

Many attendees came with family and friends personally connected to Ross Alley or Chinatown, creating an inclusive space for intergenerational and multicultural dialogues. From limited-edition zines to pop-up performances, every moment celebrated authentic expression and creative resistance.

Inspired by Artist-in-Residence Ho Tam, this groundbreaking festival united independent publishing with SF Chinatown's cultural heritage. As one participating artist noted, it was a "wonderful mix of cultural roots and tradition," uniting longtime community members with newcomers. In these uncertain times, with rising hate against API/BIPOC and LGBTQ+ communities, the festival embodied our mission of nurturing care and belonging through art.
