From: Spokane Public LibrarySpokane, WA – For artist Mel Hewitt, securing a residency at The Hive® was more than just studio space - it was a turning point. Before her residency, Mel was juggling her creative work with the constant demands of everyday life, struggling to find dedicated time and space for her craft. But stepping into her studio at The Hive, she discovered a sanctuary where her artistic practice could truly thrive.
"I came in with ideas that had been sitting in my sketchbook for years, waiting for the right moment," Mel shares. "The Hive gave me the time, space, and supportive community I needed to finally bring them to life."
Since August of 2021, more than 55 creative individuals have enjoyed artist residencies at The Hive, experiencing a free, dedicated space to explore, create, and connect. The impact has been profound, with past residents describing their experience as "transformative." From novelists to painters, sculptors to printmakers, creatives of all backgrounds have used their time at The Hive to develop work that might have otherwise remained unrealized.
Now, Spokane Public Library is opening applications for the next round of residencies, running from October 2025 through October 2026. Artists of all disciplines are encouraged to apply for residencies lasting anywhere from one to six months. Applications are open through April 12.
