Imagine setting out amid a raging nor'easter in a simple rowing boat, powered only by your crew's resolute will to save the life of someone you have never met...

Step into the gripping world of maritime heroism and uncover Hull’s vital role in the U.S. Life-Saving Service. This exhibit brings to life the extraordinary courage of the surfmen who braved raging storms and treacherous waters to rescue those in peril. Learn about their daily routines, the challenges they faced, and the dramatic rescues that shaped the history of this original life-saving station. Witness the selflessness of those who risked everything—for the souls of strangers.

The evening includes gaming chips, catered hors d'oeuvres, local beer and wine, and a special Casablanca-inspired champagne cocktail. Join Sean Baggett as he leads this walking tour as we look to uncover the network of forts and sites that make up Fortress Boston, through the evolution of Boston Harbor defenses in response to ever-changing geopolitical threats - from the Puritans through the Cold War and Counter Terrorism. Check the weather and dress appropriately and wear walking shoes. Bring a camera and binoculars if you have them. (In case of inclement weather, the walking tour will be held the following day at the same time.)

Back by popular demand, Richard Honan, award winning and well-known local artist from across the harbor in Winthrop will be returning to the museum to lead this fun morning with family and friends creating your own unique driftwood artwork at the Driftwood Collage Workshop. Everything is included in this class, driftwood, beach glass, wood panels, shells, beach stones and adhesive. At the same time, feel free to bring any beach glass or any personal collections of shells and driftwood you would like to incorporate into your collage.

As spring rolls out, Friday Painters in Hull, a joint effort with the Hull Lifesaving Museum and Hull Artists, continues our artistic adventures. We post a variety of painting locations that encourage artists to enjoy Hull's natural beauty and diverse landscapes. Mixed in the locations are seaside, historic locations, vistas and private gardens. It is organized so that we can take advantage of the morning light and finish in time not to get the afternoon burn. Open and free to all, any level or ability. There are no instructions given, just bring your supplies and enjoy. A chair, hat and water bottle are recommended.

Another unforgettable Snow Row is in the books! Over 250 rowers in 60 boats took to the waves, cheered on by a sea of spectators lining the shore and aboard the bustling spectator boat. It was a thrilling day of grit, grace, and community spirit — one for the memory books!

The museum's Summer Adventure Program offers seven weeks of discovery and exploration for children ages 5-11. Summer Adventure meets Tuesday - Thursday with two options: our regular morning program from 9:30 - 12:30 pm or our extended 9:30 - 3:00 pm program with a different theme each week. Each week includes hands-on activities, outdoor exploration, and a fun mix of history, science, and arts. Sign up for as few or as many weeks as you wish.

The museum's Summer Explorer Program is an exciting and engaging opportunity for young people ages 12-16 to learn about the natural and cultural history of Boston Harbor while developing maritime skills.

This 7-week program offers a different area of focus each week with all programming originating at our HLM Windmill Point Boathouse including our fleet of open water rowing vessels, the boathouse, the harbor and harbor islands. Areas of focus include: safety on the water, rowing and commanding (coxing) open water rowing craft, operating outboard powered boats, harbor piloting and navigation, marine environment, boat maintenance and boat building, while making connections to each other, to our past, and to our future.

Plan your summer get-togethers around our annual Harbor Illumination SCHEDULED THIS YEAR FOR SATURDAY, 7/26/25. It happens only one night a year...the magical Harbor Illumination. Join us as we once again light the harbor with more than one thousand flares celebrating Hull's maritime heritage.

Summer Job Opportunities

The Hull Lifesaving Museum has employment opportunities in our Summer Adventure and Summer Explorer programs.

Summer Adventure Program:

Applicants must be at least 16 years old and be available for an in-person interview. Interest in nature, science, art, and working with children ages 5-11 is a must!

Summer Explorer Program:

Applicants must be at least 16 years old and be available for an in-person interview. Knowledge of boating, rowing, water-based activities, nature, science, art, and working with youth ages 12-16 is a must!
