ICYMI: All Five Virginia House Republicans Vote to Pass Budget Plan That Will Slash Medicaid for 600,000+ Virginians

February 26, 2025

On Tuesday night, all five Virginia House Republicans voted to pass a budget blueprint to slash Medicaid funding. Virginia is one of the nine states where Medicaid expansion will be reversed if federal funding is cut by even one percent. That means at least 630,000 Virginians would be automatically disenrolled from Medicaid.

WVIR: Budget plan threatens Medicaid expansion in Virginia

  • “Experts say Medicaid could see major cuts if the new Republican budget plan makes it through the Senate.”

  • “The budget resolution passed the House last night [...] It proposes $880 billion in cuts to health and energy programs over the next decade.”

  • “Some have proposed eliminating the Medicaid expansion federal match rate. Should that happen, Virginia is expected to see the second largest decline in Medicaid enrollment, according to the Kaiser Family Foundation.”

  • “It estimates 45 percent of enrollees would lose coverage, or nearly 700,000 Virginians.”
