Helena, MT – Montana farmers are bracing themselves for the fallout of a potential trade war as the Trump Administration implements new tariffs on imports from Canada, Mexico, and China. While the state’s agricultural community worries about the possible economic impacts of these tariffs, Montana’s all-Republican national delegation refuses to stand up to the administration and defend working Montanans and their families.
According to reporting from NonStop Local, Montana grain growers are especially concerned about the increased cost of farming supplies and production of materials like fertilizer. Nathan Keane, Secretary for the National Association of Wheat Growers, explains how grain growers are especially vulnerable:
"It's going to be tough to make a profit on wheat this year if we are facing tariffs that are going to drive up our costs, so it's definitely a real topic, a real issue that we're facing in Montana, as a farmer myself."
“Once again, our all-Republican national delegation is showing they don’t give a damn about Montana farmers,” said Interim Executive Director of the Montana Democratic Party, Justin Ailport. “These tariffs will no doubt have adverse consequences that will directly affect Montana’s agricultural industry. Senator Daines, Senator Sheehy, Congressman Zinke and Congressman Downing need to quit kissing the ring and start looking out for Montanans.”
