ICYMI: Whitmer’s Budget Makes College More Affordable, Hall’s Roads Plan Robs Public School Coffers

Government and Politics

As Governor Whitmer is focused on lowering costs for Michiganders, Hall is focused on his own extremist agenda

LANSING — In case you missed it, Governor Whitmer made her budget recommendations to help Michiganders with the rising cost of living — including sending tens of millions of dollars towards financial aid for college students. At the same time, Speaker Matt Hall has been touting his roads plan that would steal hundreds of millions from public schools every single year, depriving teachers and students of much-needed resources.

Not only is Whitmer putting more money into scholarships, but she is also recommending that universities and community colleges limit their tuition increases in order to receive that funding. Michigan students are the future of our workforce and our state, so it is more important than ever that no one is kept from higher education by the cost.

Whitmer’s budget recommendations show that Democrats are the only party in Michigan that cares about helping working families and students make it in Michigan. From education to health care to housing, Michigan Dems will never stop fighting to lower costs for the middle class.

Crain’s Detroit Business: Whitmer’s budget would boost college scholarships, help with rising costs

  • Michigan’s public universities and colleges would see a 4% funding increase next year if the governor’s executive budget recommendations hold, something leaders say would help to improve affordability and counter rising costs…

  • “We were very pleased with the governor’s recommended 4% increase in operations support for the public universities,” said Dan Hurley, president of the Michigan Association of State Universities.

  • The funding increase would help institutions counter inflation, including the rising costs of health care benefits, keep tuition increases down and increase affordability with more institutional aid for students, he said.

  • As part of the recommendations, the Michigan Achievement Scholarship would get a total of $50 million, which would bring total ongoing funding to $350 million. The governor proposes codifying the scholarship and community college guarantee in a new public act.

  • The Tuition Incentive Program, which provides support to lower-income students attending Michigan’s public and private universities, would see a $28.5 million increase…

  • The executive budget recommendations also include $4 million for the Michigan College Access Network, which works to help the state’s students access and attain college certificates and degrees.

  • “To compete in the global economy, Michigan needs to build a flexible, well-educated workforce that is ready for the challenges of tomorrow. This budget demonstrates the governor’s commitment to our future by supporting increased college readiness, participation and completion,” MCAN Executive Director Ryan Fewins-Bliss said in a statement.
