WUSA9: “Virginia's Democratic Party chairwoman says the Youngkin administration is not grasping the magnitude of how serious the impact will be in the Commonwealth”

This week, Winsome Earle-Sears stated that federal workers who lose their jobs will be “all right,” echoing Glenn Youngkin’s repeated assertion that Virginians affected by government job cuts can easily transition to the private sector. WUSA9 highlighted the contrast between the Youngkin administration’s response to Maryland Governor Wes Moore, who launched a new website as a one-stop hub for programs and resources for laid-off federal workers.

WUSA9: Chairwoman Susan Swecker says Governor Glenn Youngkin could learn from the example being set in neighboring Maryland

  • “As the Trump administration continues slashing the federal workforce in the name of federal cost savings, Virginia's Democratic Party chairwoman says the Youngkin administration is not grasping the magnitude of how serious the impact will be in the Commonwealth.”

  • “‘It literally shows a gross misunderstanding of the workforce,’ said Susan Swecker, the outgoing Chairwoman of the Democratic Party in Virginia.”

  • “Swecker says she takes issue with Gov. Glenn Youngkin (R-Virginia) and Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears suggesting that federal employees who lose their jobs will find opportunities in the private sector, without actually providing guidance in how to navigate the layoffs.”

  • “‘Glenn Youngkin has said we have plenty of job opportunities in Virginia, and people can get another job. Lt. Gov. Sears has made a similar statement this week, and again I think that is an arrogant elitist attitude,’ she added.”

  • “Youngkin has expressed support for President Donald Trump's policies to change [...] The Republican governor has said President Trump is simply following through on his campaign promises.”

  • “With an estimated 145,000 federal employees in Virginia, Swecker says the commonwealth could learn from what neighboring Maryland is doing.”

  • “Last week, Maryland Gov. Wes Moore (D-Maryland) launched a one-stop website dedicated to help impacted workers navigate unemployment insurance, job searches, and legal resources. [...]’”

  • Job centers in Virginia say they are bracing for an influx of skilled federal employees like they have never seen before.
