IDP Chair Rita Hart Reacts to Trump Shrinking U.S. Economy

DES MOINES - Under Donald Trump’s leadership, the United States had negative economic growth for the first time in three years. This is because of Trump’s unaffordable agenda that is shrinking the economy as Americans pull back spending amid skyrocketing prices.

Under Republican leadership, Iowa’s economic growth was 49th in the nation last year. Thanks to Donald Trump’s reckless economic agenda, the entire country is economically falling behind the rest of the world.

  • The Chinese economy grew by 5.4% in the first quarter of 2025 as compared to the first quarter of 2024.
  • The Canadian economy is not shrinking. Canada grew by an annualized rate of 1.5 and the Eurozone’s economy grew by an annualized rate of 1.2% in the first quarter of 2025.

“While China, Canada, and the European Union are seeing a rise in their GDP, Trump and Iowa Republicans are dragging our state and our country downward. Iowans are disproportionately feeling the effects of the Republican’s unaffordable agenda as our economic growth was 49th in the nation last year. We are quickly falling behind the rest of the United States and the entire world and we can’t take any more failure from Republican leadership. We are not ‘winning’,” said IDP Chair Rita Hart. “Solutions to this downward slide do exist. As an example, yesterday Governor Tom Vilsack offered his thoughts on growing our rural economy to voters in Warren County. In the coming weeks and months, Iowa Democratic leaders and candidates will offer real alternatives to get Iowa’s economy growing again.”
