In His Own Words: Brad Schimel’s Top 10 Greatest Hits

Government and Politics

March 12, 2025

MADISON, Wis. — On March 12th, Brad Schimel will take to the debate stage and attempt to rewrite the history of how he failed Wisconsinites. We’re not going to let that happen.

So before Brad Schimel tries to spin his extremist record and deceive Wisconsinites, here’s Schimel’s real record, in his own words.

Brad Schimel’s top 10 greatest hits:

  • “The 1849 law is valid”: As a candidate for the Wisconsin Supreme Court, Brad Schimel has reaffirmed his support for overturning reproductive rights and enforcing Wisconsin’s 1849 criminal abortion ban, which doesn’t include exceptions for rape, incest, or health of the mother. Schimel has said “the Wisconsin 1849 law is valid – there’s nothing in that law to make it invalid.”

  • Wisconsin’s women Supreme Court Justices are too “driven by their emotions”: Brad Schimel recently accused four of Wisconsin’s women Supreme Court justices of being too “driven by their emotions” to remain objective on the bench, claiming they were “on the brink of losing it” during oral arguments over Wisconsin’s 1849 criminal abortion ban.

  • “There is not a constitutional right to abortion” in Wisconsin: The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel recently reported that Schimel said behind closed doors, “There is not a constitutional right to abortion in our state constitution. That will be a sham if they find that.”

  • “The Wisconsin Supreme Court screwed [Trump] over”: Brad Schimel has continued to spread disinformation about long-debunked election conspiracies and blamed the state Supreme Court for “screwing” over Donald Trump by not overturning the 2020 election.

  • “What is flawed?” about Wisconsin’s 1849 abortion ban: As Waukesha County District Attorney, Brad Schimel actively defended the 1849 ban by signing onto a legal white paper agreeing that it should be enforced if Roe was struck down. Schimel recently said “They’ve [the WI Supreme Court] got several issues in front of them. One is the 1849 ban on abortions, which, by the way, what is flawed about that law?”

  • An “honor” to have a case named Planned Parenthood v. Brad Schimel: As Attorney General, Brad Schimel sued to restrict abortion access in Wisconsin, and even called it an “honor to have a case named Planned Parenthood v. Brad Schimel.” Judge Crawford represented Planned Parenthood in the suit—and Brad Schimel lost.

  • Falsely claimed there was no “backlog” of untested rape kits: As Waukesha County District Attorney, Schimel allowed 26 rape kits to remain untested. During his first two years as Attorney General, Brad Schimel tested only nine out of over 6,000 untested rape kits, allowing violent offenders to walk free. Brad Schimel later lied about the rape kit backlog, claiming that “a few hundred” backlogged kits had been tested when only nine had actually been processed.

  • Blaming survivors of sexual assault for “bad judgment”: Brad Schimel blamed sexual assault victims for their own “bad judgment.”

  • Jan 6. insurrectionists didn’t receive a “fair shot”: Brad Schimel’s extremist views were on display again when he recently defended the January 6 insurrectionists who assaulted police and claimed that they did not receive a “fair shot” in court.

  • Schimel vows to be a “support network” for Trump: This month, Brad Schimel spoke with a group of canvassers and said that he will turn the Wisconsin Supreme Court into a “support network” for Donald Trump.
