Iowa House Republicans Put On Show in Sham House Oversight Committee Meeting

Government and Politics

The same House Republicans who voted for a corrupt bill that allows the Reynolds Administration to hide the abuse of taxpayer money are trying to cover their tracks

DES MOINES, IA - Iowa Republicans deserve no applause for the political theatre they put on in a House Government Oversight Committee Hearing today.

After House Republicans passed the most pro-public corruption bill in Iowa history (SF478) that allows the Reynolds Administration to hide waste, fraud, and abuse of taxpayer dollars, the Oversight Committee held a sham hearing to deflect blame for the Administration’s failures.

The Iowa GOP is carrying water for years of mismanagement of the Iowa governmenthiding their billion-dollar voucher program from taxpayers and not disclosing issues within the Judicial Branch when they knew about it months before the Auditor.

“What you saw in today’s oversight hearing was nothing more than a political witch hunt by Iowa Republicans who are desperately trying to explain why they’re hiding facts about how taxpayer dollars are being spent by the state,” said Iowa Democratic Party Chair Rita Hart. “The truth is Iowa Republicans have no one but themselves to blame for stripping the Auditor’s Office of its power and blocking the ability to oversee how a billion dollars of taxpayer money will be spent over the next ten years on private schools and their failed attempts at covering up corruption by their colleagues. Instead of pointing fingers, Iowa Republicans should do their jobs and hold themselves accountable to Iowa taxpayers.”
