A River Speaks Documentary Film Screening: Presented by the Branford Land Trust and the Branford Arts and Cultural Alliance

The Branford Land Trust and the Branford Arts & Cultural Alliance join forces to present the film A River Speaks by Steve Hamm on Tuesday, May 30, 6:30 p.m. at the Blackstone Memorial Library. The film will be followed by a question and answer discussion.

A River Speaks is an exploration of the Mill River, a small river in south-central Connecticut. But, more broadly, it is an examination of humanity’s complex relationship with the rest of nature. We love our rivers, but we treat them terribly. We poison them with sewage, industrial waste, herbicides, pesticides, and fertilizers. And when we poison our rivers, we poison ourselves. The film is an inspiration, a warning, and a call to action.

Steve Hamm, director, is a freelance writer, book author, and documentary filmmaker based in New Haven, CT. He has made a series of community-building documentaries in collaboration with Scott N. Amore, including The Village: Life in New Haven’s Little Italy and Fentanyl Madness. His latest book, The Pivot: Addressing Global Problems Through Local Action, was published by Columbia University Press in 2021. He is currently one of the leaders in a grassroots climate action initiative, Reimagining New Haven in the Era of Climate Change.

Keeping Family Informed: How to Get Your Estate Organized for the Important Times in Life
Thursday, June 1 from 6 - 8pm

Attorney Christian Edmonds will offer practical advice and tools for planning and organizing estate documents. Chris has over 35 years of experience in service to Connecticut families, with law offices in Branford since 1991. He is admitted to the Connecticut and Florida bars, and is a member and past president of the New Haven County Bar Association. Chris is also a member of the Executive Committee of the Estates and Probate section of the CT Bar Association, and a Certified Public Accountant.

Awakening to Change is designed to help unify our community by developing a shared understanding of the history, policy, and experiences shaping contemporary discussions of race. We tackle a new topic each month, sometimes reading books, discussing films, or learning from articles. All are welcome to join!

Exploring Our Grief Journey:
A Grief Support Group

Every Monday from 6 - 7:30pm
An open peer support group led by AccentCare Bereavement Volunteer Cheryl Cole and centered around the legacy of your loved one. Connect with others who are grieving, and join a compassionate group of listeners dedicated to honoring fond memories and exploring the impact of loss and grief on their lives.

Cheryl Cole is an AccentCare Bereavement Volunteer and a Certified Grief Recovery Specialist. She has a passion for supporting individuals in their process of grief from a feelings based approach.

Writers Group
Meets the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays of the Month
from 6:30 - 7:30pm
Looking to connect with other writers in the Branford area? Join our brand new writers group! Group will meet biweekly for sessions that include a block of writing time, as well as a workshop session. Meet fellow writers and workshop new and old pieces in a friendly and supportive environment. All genres/levels welcome.
