A Two-day world-class jazz festival featuring a robust lineup of performers – from local legends to Grammy Award-winning jazz masters!

The 2023 Jazz Fest Pompano Beach will take place from January 20th to 21st, with over a dozen fabulous concerts – including a beach opening night concert and all-day and evening concerts at Old Town Pompano Beach. In addition to world renowned headliners on both the opening and final nights, the lineup features an eclectic and diverse cast of Grammy Award-winners, burgeoning jazz superstars and a slew of South Florida’s finest talent. There's something for everyone at the immersive “jazz takeover” of Pompano Beach in January. Festival experiences will include up-close-and-personal performances, artist conversations, multiple outdoor stages with seasoned and emerging artists, as well as drink, food and art vendors.

8:00PM - 9:30PM: SPYRO GYRA

Born in Brooklyn, bandleader Jay Beckenstein grew up listening to the music of Louis Armstrong, Charlie Parker, Sonny Rollins and Dizzy Gillespie, and started playing the saxophone at age seven. Beckenstein attended the University at Buffalo, starting out as a biology major before changing to music performance. During summer breaks, he and an old high school friend, keyboardist Jeremy Wall, played gigs together back on Long Island. Wall attended college in California, and after both graduated, Beckenstein stayed in Buffalo’s thriving music scene, where Wall eventually joined him.

Spyro Gyra has long been known to its peers in the contemporary jazz world as a “well-oiled road machine” due to its relentless schedule of 48 years of performing. To date, they have logged more than 10,000 shows on six continents and released 35 albums, garnering platinum and gold records along the way. Spyro Gyra rose from humble beginnings in Buffalo, New York in 1974 to their current international prominence in the jazz world. Every year, they continue to exhibit how to remain among a relative handful of artists who will be able to say that they have worked constantly in their 50-year career in the year 2024. Their energy and joy in concert match their unmatched musicality.

About the Host: Mark Ruffin

This year 2022, Mark celebrated his 42nd year in broadcasting and journalism. He’s worked for over 25 years as Jazz Editor for Chicago Magazine and has written hundreds of articles on jazz, broadcasting and African-American culture. He has produced radio for Oprah Winfrey, Gayle King, Ramsey Lewis, Marcus Miller, Steppenwolf Theatre, Christian McBride and many more. He is winner of both the Jazz Journalists Association Career Excellence in Broadcasting Award and the Duke Dubois Humanitarian Award from Jazzweek.com.

He shared a Grammy nomination with Rene Marie and has produced music for other artists as well including George Freeman, Charenee Wade, Giacomo Gates, Lauren Henderson, and others.

He is winner of both the Jazz Journalists Association Career Excellence in Broadcasting Award and the Duke Dubois Humanitarian Award from Jazzweek.com. In 2019 he was honored by Jazzmobile with their NYC Jazz Readers Award.

12PM: FANNI SARKOZY

An internationally recognized, highly trained pianist, singer and music educator who is equally proficient in jazz, pop and classical music. Born into a family of musicians, Fanni began her piano studies at the tender age of 6. She graduated with honors at the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music in Budapest, Hungary with a major in piano in 2004. While teaching classical piano at the Academy’s jazz faculty since 2007, Fanni has also achieved international recognition as keyboardist/vocalist and songwriter of the smooth jazz / fusion group Mizar and Mrs. Columbo.

1:30PM: YAINER HORTA

A Grammy Nominee, versatile saxophonist, multi- instrumentalist, band leader and composer (born September 10, 1982 in Cuba). Throughout his career, his work has been present in recordings, festivals and world tours with great artists such as: Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Ricardo Arjona, Olga Tan?on, Jorge Luis Chacin, Denisse de Kalafe, Habana Abierta, Valeria Lynch, and among others more.

3:00PM: DIXIE KINGS

An authentic traditional New Orleans Dixieland jazz band that creates toe-tapping, swinging and infectious music to perfect fun, upbeat atmosphere for any occasion; ceremonial, corporate or social. The Fabulous Dixie King's repertoire includes all the classic Dixieland standards and New Orleans jazz favorites. Flexibility of size and instrumentation is a hallmark of Fabulous Dixie, from five to seven pieces are the most popular sizes for the band, but larger, smaller or anywhere in between sounds great.

4:30PM - 6:30PM: NANNY ASSIS

A Brazilian- American singer, percussionist, composer, producer and guitarist Based in NYC Area. In 2011 and 2017 , he was the recipient of the prestigious Brazilian International Press Award as “Best Singer of the Year.” He is a composer of the new season NYC-Based Musical “Rio Uphill”. His albums are titled Brazilian Vibes, Double Rainbow and Honey and Air. Assis has shared the stage with Requinte Trio, Vinicius Cantua?ria, Eumir Deodato, Joao Donato, Kenny Baron and Paul Simon.

1:00PM - 3:00PM: FIU Student Vocal Studio, under the direction of Dr. Lisanne Lyons

Florida International University's music students benefit from working in a conservatory-style atmosphere alongside internationally celebrated performers and composers, scholars, and teachers, who are dedicated to inspiring and mentoring the next generation of music leaders. The school has educated hundreds of performers, scholars, and music educators, many of whom are now leaders in their respective fields across the state of Florida and around the world. Housed in the Wertheim Performing Arts Center since 1996, we attract internationally acclaimed musicians and scholars every year to present masterclasses and guest lectures, or to perform side-by-side with our students and faculty artists.

Tamara is a Texas native, who initially felt drawn to the television industry and landed her first radio opportunity at KUT, the college station at her alma mater, The University of Texas at Austin. With more than 30 years in professional radio with stints in Dallas, Tallahassee and Miami, Tamara G. landed her first professional on-air job with KDMX Mix 102.9 in Dallas. Currently, she is the Morning Show Co-Host of “Those Two Girls in the Morning” with her longtime radio partner, Julie Guy, on 101.5 Lite FM in Miami-Fort Lauderdale. She has also won numerous awards including the Tallahassee Branch NAACP Black Achiever Award (1996); The Orange Bowl Committee’s Excellence in Service Award (2000); among others.

Universally known as one of the most iconic saxophonists of the current age, David Sanborn is a jazz musician at heart, but has transcended genres and musical boundaries throughout his entire career. Rolling Stone says, ‘Among the great saxophonists of the past four decades, David Sanborn has earned an identity all his own. He’s jazz, he’s funk, he’s soul, he’s pop, he’s blues, he’s rock. Most remarkably, he excels in each of these genres with a voice that is forceful and tender, sensuous and subtle.’ Sanborn has released 24 albums, won six Grammy Awards, and has had eight gold albums and one platinum. He continues to be one of the most active musicians of his genre and an inspiration to countless other musicians.

Returning to his passion for jazz, Sanborn recently assembled a stunning program of straight-ahead jazz tunes for his new quintet. Looking forward to sharing his approach and interpretation on stages soon, Sanborn is excited to collaborate and feature a band of saxophone, trombone, keys, bass, and drums.
