A reminder that while JCPRD’s 50 Plus programs are primarily for people who are age 50 or older, interested parties who have not yet reached that magic age may still be able to attend. Persons 18 and older who are interested in a 50 Plus class are invited to call the 50 Plus Department at 913-826-2975 for space availability.

Here’s a sampling of programs JCPRD has coming up for the week of May 7-13:
May 9 - Adventure Walk: Konza Prairie (Ages 50 Plus)
Departs from Antioch Park, 6501 Antioch, Merriam, 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., $35 per person, $37 nonresidents
1st of a new season! Located in the Flint Hills, this native tallgrass prairie offers some of the most beautiful scenery in Kansas. Partake in a hike to learn more about the prairie. This hike will have some hills and will be on dirt/gravel trails. Lunch will be in town after the hike. Lunch costs on your own. Activity number 24854.
May 10 - Special Event: Soup, Salad, and the Strolling Strings (Ages 50 & Older)
Matt Ross Community Center, 8101 Marty St., Overland Park, 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., $17 per person, $19 nonresidents
Enjoy a delicious lunch of soup, salad, and dessert and delight in melodies by the talented Shawnee Mission North Strolling Strings. Activity number 26935.
May 11 - Day Trip: Go Wild In Omaha (Ages 50 & Older)
Departs from Antioch Park, 6501 Antioch, Merriam, 6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., $147 per person
Take a walk on the wild side at the Omaha Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium. Spend the day strolling the zoo at your leisure and meet the group mid-day for boxed lunches in a reserved event space on-site. Travelers should expect a high level of walking and mild inclines. Places to sit are available throughout the zoo. Activity number 26687.
May 12 deadline - play begins June 10 - Soccer: New Century Fieldhouse Pee Wee Summer Leagues (Ages 4-6)
New Century Fieldhouse, 551 New Century Parkway, near Gardner, 8 a.m. to Noon., $65 per person
The indoor pee wee league is designed for kids in preschool and kindergarten (going by 2023-2024 school year). Teams meet on six Saturday mornings beginning June 10 to practice for 20-minutes followed by a 30-minute game. Format is 4 v 4 with no goalie. Parent volunteers are the coaches and will serve as the official during the game. Parents who are chosen to coach must pass a background check and complete a volunteer form, and will have their child's fee waived. Fee includes the game day shirt. Activity number 29485. May 12 deadline - play begins June 4 - Volleyball NCF Summer for individuals and teams (Grades 3-8)
New Century Fieldhouse, 551 New Century Parkway, near Gardner, Sunday evenings, 7 sessions, $113 per person, $680 per team
Please register the child in the grade they'll be in for school year 2023-2024. Teams will play six weeks of doubleheaders for a total of 12 matches. For individual registrations, click here. May 12 deadline - play begins June 12 - Summer Indoor Soccer Leagues (Grades 1-8)
New Century Fieldhouse, 551 New Century Parkway, near Gardner, Saturdays, $72 including game day T-shirt
With separate teams for boys and girls, the summer league participants will play six games. Age groups will be set as 1st/2nd grades, 3rd/4th grades, 5th/6th grades, and 7th/8th grades, based on grade placement for the 2023-2024 school year. Games are played Saturday between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. Teams will practice for 15-minutes followed by a game of two 20-minute halves. Format is 4v4 which includes a goalie. Parent volunteer coaches are needed. Any parent who volunteers and is selected and approved as a coach, will have their child's fee waived. May 13 - Pickleball: Spring Lucky Shots Pickleball Tournament (Ages 18 & Older)
Meadowbrook Park, 9101 Nall Ave., Prairie Village, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., $30 per person
NEW! Come join us for a day of outdoor pickleball fun! Divisions available for gender and mixed doubles. All players must be 18 years of age by Dec. 23. May 13 - Hands-On Soldering: Building a DaVinci Probe (Ages 8 & Older; Ages 8-17 accompanied by Adult)
Johnson County Arts & Heritage Center, 8788 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park, six separate 20-minute sessions offered between 10 a.m. and Noon, FREE
Join us for an out-of-this-world adventure at our learn-to-solder workshop! Flex your engineering muscles and solder your own blinky DaVinci Venus Probe while getting inspired by NASA’s mission to uncover the mysteries of our neighboring planet. Only participants ages 8 and older are permitted to attend the workshop as participants will be using soldering iron. This workshop is a partnership between the Johnson County Library's Black & Veatch MakerSpace and JCPRD's Fine Arts Department and is part of a Kansas City-wide STEM Education event; Remake Learning Days. May 13 - Lanesfield Historic Site - Open Hours (All Ages)
18745 S. Dillie Road, Edgerton, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the second Saturday of each month, FREE
The limestone schoolhouse, the last remaining structure in the former town of Lanesfield, is the oldest operating schoolhouse in Johnson County. Students attended from 1869 - 1963 when the school closed. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1988. The site today includes the original schoolhouse, four outbuildings, and a modern visitors center that houses the exhibit “One-Room Schools in Kansas,” a museum store, and restrooms.
