Dedicated to enhancing the quality of life in our community, Johnson County Park and Recreation District offers year-round program, activities, and special events for all ages!

To register by phone, call 913-831-3359. For all in-person programs, physical distancing and COVID-19 safe practices will be encouraged.

A reminder that while JCPRD’s 50 Plus programs are primarily for people who are age 50 or older, interested parties who have not yet reached that magic age may still be able to attend. Persons 18 and older who are interested in a 50 Plus class are invited to call the 50 Plus Department at 913-826-2975 for space availability.

Here's a sampling of programs JCPRD has coming up for the week of March 12-18:

March 13, 14, 15, 16, & 17 - Museum: Kids' Days Out (Ages 6-10)

Johnson County Museum at Johnson County Arts & Heritage Center, 8788 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., $38 per person

Come have fun when school is out! Discover history through hands-on activities and exploration of KidScape and museum exhibits, play games, and enjoy down time. Bring a lunch, snacks, and water bottle and dress for the weather - we will go outside if we can. We are open from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but you may drop off and pick up at any time. Five-year-old children can be enrolled if currently attending kindergarten. March 13 session, activity number 24541. March 14 session, activity number 24542. March 13, 14, 15, 16, & 17 - Nature Programs: Spring Fling Fun (All Ages)

Ernie Miller Nature Center, 909 N. Kansas 7 Highway, Olathe, daily 10 to 10:45 a.m., $4 per person, Ages 2 and under free

Come enjoy spring with a trip to Ernie Miller Nature Park. Visitors are welcome to view the exhibition gallery and hike the trails all week. Park staff will entertain guests with a special program each day at 10 a.m. Every program will feature live animals. Advance registration recommended; walk-in admissions accepted only if space is available. Monday’s (3/13) program is “Hooray for Spring,” activity number 24764. Tuesday (3/14) “Whooo Are the Owls,” activity number 24675. Wednesday (3/15) “Kids and Critters,” activity number 24676. Thursday (3/16) “Reptile Roundup,” activity number 24677 And Friday (3/17), “End of the Rainbow,” activity number 24678 For more information call 913-826-2800.

March 14 - Concert: New Horizons Band Concert Series (All Ages)

Johnson County Arts & Heritage Center, 8788 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park, 7 to 8 p.m., FREE

The New Horizons Band invites you to their free concert. Donations for band needs will be accepted. If you are interested in watching online, contact Lisa for the link [email protected]. Activity number 23944.

 March 14 - Special Interest: UFO Museum (Ages 50 & Older)

Virtual Program, 10 to 11 a.m., FREE 

It's a bird, it's a plane, it's a UFO! Enjoy a virtual presentation by the staff at the UFO Museum in Roswell, New Mexico. Activity number 24765.

 March 13 registration deadline - games begin April 3 -  Youth Fastpitch – Spring / Summer (T-Ball - 14U)

Mid-America West Sports Complex, 20200 Johnson Dr., Shawnee, Weekday evenings and Sundays, times, days, and costs vary 

Individual and team registrations are being accepted for this 10-game season for T-Ball through 14U, which will run from April 3 through July 6. Games will be played on weekday evenings and Sundays depending on division. Individual registrations will be accepted and teams will be formed from the individual registrations received. Volunteer coaches are needed for each team. If you volunteer to coach and are chosen to be a head coach, your child will receive 50% off registration fees. Players who have friends that sign up or go to the same school can be placed on the same team. For more information contact Okun Fieldhouse at 913-826-2900.

 March 15 - Special Event: Gamin’ with the Grandkids (Ages 5 & Older with 50 & Older)

Matt Ross Community Center, 8101 Marty St., Overland Park, 1:30 to 3 p.m., $7 per person, $8 nonresidents

Back by popular demand, who’s ready for some more fun and games? Enjoy an afternoon of music, eight games of bingo, photo booth, and more. Light refreshments served. Activity number 24549.

 March 16 - FREE Day at the Museum (All Ages)

Johnson County Museum at Johnson County Arts & Heritage Center, 8788 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park, 9 a.m. to 4:30, FREE

Explore the Johnson County Museum’s signature exhibition as well as the current special exhibition “Away from Home: American Indian Boarding School Stories” (which ends March 18), to gain a deeper understanding of the county’s history and growth during this free day. No pregistration required for museum entry. For more information call 913-826-2787.

March 16 - Adventure Walk: Missouri Riverfront Heritage Trail & Kaw (Ages 50 Plus)

Departs from Antioch Park, 6501 Antioch, Merriam, 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., $25 per person, $27 nonresidents

Stroll along a paved trail following the river just outside of downtown Kansas City. Learn the history of the river and the surrounding area by viewing the interpretive signs along the path. We will then hop back on the bus and head to Lewis and Clark Park at Kaw Point to view the river and check out the open air education pavilion. March 17 - Geocaching: St. Patrick’s Day Geocache (All Ages)

Shawnee Mission Park Shelter #2, 7900 Renner Road, Shawnee & Lenexa, 11 a.m. to Noon, or Noon to 1 p.m., $7 per person, $8 nonresidents)

NEW! This modern-day scavenger hunt is a great way to spend time with the family out in your local park. Each group is loaned one GPS device and given instructions on how to find the caches hidden around Shawnee Mission Park small lakes area. Caches are filled with leprechaun gold! Collect it all for a special prize! Meet at Shelter #2. 11 a.m. session, activity number 24522. Noon session, activity number 24523.

March 17 Deadline - play begins March 30 - Volleyball: NCF Thursday Women's Power League (Ages 18 & Older)

New Century Fieldhouse, 551 New Century Parkway, near Gardner, Thursdays, times vary, 8 sessions, $235 per team

March 18 - Gymnastics: Indoor Open Gym (Ages 4-17)

Mill Creek Activity Center, 6518 Vista Dr., Shawnee, 12:30 to 1:30 p.m., $6 per person

Head to Mill Creek Activity Center for 60 minutes of unstructured, supervised gym time on all gymnastics apparatuses, trampoline, and our loose foam pit.
