Dedicated to enhancing the quality of life in our community, Johnson County Park and Recreation District offers year-round program, activities, and special events for all ages!

To register by phone, call 913-831-3359. For all in-person programs, physical distancing and COVID-19 safe practices will be encouraged.

A reminder that while JCPRD’s 50 Plus programs are primarily for people who are age 50 or older, interested parties who have not yet reached that magic age may still be able to attend. Persons 18 and older who are interested in a 50 Plus class are invited to call the 50 Plus Department at 913-826-2975 for space availability.

Here's a sampling of programs JCPRD has coming up for the week of Feb. 26-March 4: 

Feb. 26 - Flag Football: Clinic with Challenger Sports (Grades K-8)

Okun Fieldhouse at Mid-America West Sports Complex, 20200 Johnson Dr., Shawnee, Sunday evenings, 4 sessions, $60 per person, $66 nonresidents)

Join Challenger Sports at Okun Fieldhouse to learn the game or enhance already honed skills. New and experienced players are welcome. Beginners will be introduced to the sport by learning mechanics and game play. More experienced players will be able to fine tune skills in preparation for upcoming seasons. Players will be divided into teams for drills and scrimmages. Clinic for Grades K & 1, activity number 25837. Feb. 28 - Early Learning: Sky Stories (Ages 3-6)

Meadowbrook Park Clubhouse, 9101 Nall Ave., Prairie Village, 10:30 to 11:15 a.m., $8 per person, $9 nonresidents

Come listen to the stories in the sky and find out if you can roar like Leo the lion or stomp like Taurus the bull as we explore the night sky in Ernie Miller Nature Center’s portable planetarium. Activity number 24574

Feb. 28 - Reading: Wanderlust Book Club - “The Alchemist” (Ages 50 & Older)

Meadowbrook Park Clubhouse, 9101 Nall Ave., Prairie Village, 2 to 3 p.m., $5 per person, $6 nonresidents

Intertwine your love of travel and a good book with a travel-themed book club. Each month, enjoy the selected book from the list and conclude the month at the clubhouse with a group discussion on how it relates to your travel and how it may inspire your Wanderlust. This month’s book is “The Alchemist” by Paulo Coelho. This masterpiece tells the magical story of Santiago, an Andalusian shepherd boy who yearns to travel in search of a worldly treasure as extravagant as any ever found. The story of the treasures Santiago finds along the way teaches us, as only a few stories can, about the essential wisdom of listening to our hearts, learning to read the omens strewn along life's path, and, above all, following our dreams. Activity number 24814. March 1 & 22- Preschool Storytime: Animal Tales (Ages 2-6 with an Adult)

Ernie Miller Nature Center, 909 N. Kansas 7 Highway, Olathe, select Wednesdays, 10:30 to 11 a.m., $3 per person

Join a park naturalist for animal stories and surprises geared for preschool age children. Come listen, learn, and meet a special animal friend every time. All children must be accompanied by a paying adult. Program held indoors. March 1 session, Animal Peek a Boo, activity number 24702; March 22 session, Spring Up, activity number 24703. March 2 - Museum: "Away From Home" Program with Dr. Kim Warren (Ages 16 & Older)

Johnson County Museum at Johnson County Arts & Heritage Center, 8788 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park, 6 to 7 p.m., $8 per person, $6.40 museum members.

Join Dr. Kim Warren, Professor of History at the University of Kansas, for a special presentation. This program complements the museum’s special traveling exhibit, "Away from Home: American Indian Boarding School Stories," on display Feb. 1 - March 18. Activity number 26206. 

March 2 - Little Critter’s Day Out: Space Explorers (Ages 3-5)

Ernie Miller Nature Center, 909 N. Kansas 7 Highway, Olathe, 9 a.m. to Noon, $20 per person, $22 nonresidents

Your Little Critter will enjoy three hours of fun and education once as you enjoy some personal time! Activities will vary but we will have an adventure, eat a snack, make a craft, play games, and see an animal visitor each day. Dress for the weather. March 3 - Art: Homeschool Clay Creations (Ages 5-14)

Johnson County Arts & Heritage Center, 8788 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park, Fridays, 10 to 11:30 a.m., 4 sessions, $97 per person, $106 nonresidents

Come get creative and explore clay. Students will get the opportunity to throw on the wheel and hand-build with clay to hone their ceramics skills over a series of four classes. Students will end class with finished pieces ready to fire and glaze in our Art Studio. Activity number 23948

March 4 - Scouts: Juliette’s Dream (Ernie Miller Nature Center, 909 N. Kansas 7 Highway, Olathe, 10:30 a.m. or 1 p.m., All Ages, $7 per person, $8 nonresidents, $9 on day of event, if space is available)

Juliette Gordon Low introduced Girl Scouting to American girls. Join us for a special appearance of Juliette herself as she describes her childhood favorites and inspirations. Juliette Gordon Low loved adventure and nature and thought girls should go camping…she wanted girls to dream big! In 1912 this spirited woman introduced Girl Scouting to American girls. Celebrate 111 years of Girl Scouts with a salute to the founder with an original presentation honoring her life. Juliette’s dream was to build bridges of understanding to promote world peace and international friendship. Her heart’s desire was for girls to have opportunities to develop courage, confidence, and friendships. All children must be accompanied by one adult chaperone per group of five.
