A reminder that while JCPRD’s 50 Plus programs are primarily for people who are age 50 or older, interested parties who have not yet reached that magic age may still be able to attend. Persons 18 and older who are interested in a 50 Plus class are invited to call the 50 Plus Department at 913-826-2975 for space availability.

Here’s a sampling of programs JCPRD has coming up for the week of Aug. 13-19:

Aug. 13 Summer season ends at Shawnee Mission Park Marina & Beach (All Ages), 7900 Renner Road, Shawnee & Lenexa, + SMP Marina, will be open Saturday and Sundays through Sept. 4, while summer seasons at Kill Creek Park Beach & Marina, 11670 Homestead Lane, Olathe (All Ages) end Aug. 4, hours, rental, and admission fees vary

The Shawnee Mission Park Marina will offer daily hours through Aug. 13, followed by weekend hours on Saturdays and Sundays through Sept. 4. The Shawnee Mission Park Beach will also end its season on Aug. 13, while the Kill Creek Park Beach and Marina will both end their summer seasons on Aug. 4. Marinas offer boat rentals, including canoes, pedal boats, kayaks, and paddleboards. Walk-ins are welcome, but reservations are recommended for the Shawnee Mission Park Marina, where boat rentals can be reserved online up to seven days in advance. Aug. 14 & 18 - Gymnastics: Indoor Playground (Ages 1-5)

Mill Creek Activity Center, 6518 Vista Dr., Shawnee, 11 a.m. to noon, $5 per person

Indoor Playground incorporates fun-filled playtime with obstacle courses and play gym equipment. Children up to 5 years of age will have the opportunity to focus their energy while developing strength and agility. Parent/legal guardian will be asked to sign a waiver and an adult must be present with their child at all times. Aug. 15 - Games: Virtual Scattergories® (Ages 50 & Older)

Virtual Program, 10 to 11 a.m., FREE

Think fast and write quicker in this fun and fast-paced game of alliterative words and categories!  Zoom link will be emailed the day prior to the program. Zoom information is also on the receipt notes. Activity number 26611.

Aug. 16 - Day Trip: Amelia's Story (Ages 50 & Older)
Departs from Antioch Park, 6501 Antioch, Merriam, 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., $119 per person

Newly announced! - Travel to Atchison, Kan., to learn about the life and legacy of Amelia Earhart. Visit the newly renovated Amelia Earhart Hanger Museum, as well as the Birthplace Museum. After lunch, enjoy a tour of the Atchison County Historical Society Museum and gift store in the Old Depot. Moderate walking and the use of stairs is expected on this trip. Lunch included. Aug. 16 deadline - play begins Aug. 27 - Soccer: New Century Fieldhouse Men's Fall League (Ages 18 & Older)

New Century Fieldhouse, 551 New Century Parkway, near Gardner, 8 games, Sundays, Game times vary, $650 per team

Games are played Sunday afternoon and evening. League play has five field players plus the goalie. Activity number 31184. For questions, call 913-826-2850.

Aug. 18 - Movies in the Park: “Top Gun Maverick” (Rated PG-13)

Theatre in the Park in Shawnee Mission Park with a separate entrance at 7710 Renner Road, Shawnee, Gates open at 8 p.m., movie starts between 8:30 and 8:45 p.m., depending on sunset, $1 per person

Final Movie in the Park for 2023! - After more than 30 years of service as one of the Navy's top aviators, Pete "Maverick" Mitchell is where he belongs, pushing the envelope as a courageous test pilot and dodging the advancement in rank that would ground him. Training a detachment of graduates for a special assignment, Maverick must confront the ghosts of his past and his deepest fears, culminating in a mission that demands the ultimate sacrifice from those who choose to fly it.

Aug. 18 deadline - Trip Takes Place Oct. 7 - OZtoberfest in Wamego (Ages 50 & Older)

Departs from Antioch Park, 6501 Antioch, Merriam, 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., $114 per person (includes lunch)

Celebrate the fall season and all things OZ in Wamego, Kan. Attend events in the Columbian Theatre, tour the OZ Museum, watch or participate in an OZ costume contest, visit the outdoor OZ Market, Classic Car Show, Wizard’s Beer & Wine Garden, Auntie Em’s Boutique, Dorothy Through the Years Fashion Show, and other OZsome activities. Enjoy a catered lunch as a group at the nearby event center. Extensive walking is to be expected. Activity number 31815.

The six locations above all offer low-cost drop-in programs where participants can play with friends and make new ones while participating in these fun weekly groups! Activities vary by locations and include: chess, cribbage, dominoes, duplicate bridge, hand and foot, mah jongg, Mexican train dominoes, pitch, pinocle, and progressive bridge.
