A reminder that while JCPRD’s 50 Plus programs are primarily for people who are age 50 or older, interested parties who have not yet reached that magic age may still be able to attend. Persons 18 and older who are interested in a 50 Plus class are invited to call the 50 Plus Department at 913-826-2975 for space availability.

Here’s a sampling of programs JCPRD has coming up for the week of July 9-15:

 

June 28 – New Century Fieldhouse Blood Drive (Ages 17 & Older and must weigh at least 110 lbs.)

New Century Fieldhouse, 551 New Century Parkway, near Gardner, Noon to 4 p.m., FREE

Conducted in cooperation with the Community Blood Center, this JCPRD employee blood drive is also open to the public. Donors will receive two tickets to the Kansas City Royals. To make an appointment, visit https://donate.savealifenow.org/donor/schedules/drive_schedule/79544.

 

July 10 - Group Youth Swim Lessons (Ages 6 months & Older)

Shawnee Mission School District Aquatic Center, 17251 W. 87th St., Lenexa, Mondays and Wednesdays, 30 classes in eight levels, beginning times, and class durations vary, 7 sessions, $57 per child, $63 nonresidents

Morning and evening classes available. Lesson levels include: Baby & Me, Tot & Me, Preschool A, Preschool B, Level 1, Level 2, Level 3, and Level 4. July 10-13 - Computers: Movie Makers Camp (Ages 9-15)

Mill Creek Activity Center, 6518 Vista Avenue, Shawnee, Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to Noon, 4 sessions, $160 per person, $176 nonresidents 

This hands-on, interactive course will instruct students on the world of digital video design and production. Students will film, direct, and edit their own digital video creation. Students enrolled in this course will amaze their peers with green screen and special effects work Activity number 27129.

 

July 10-14 - Buddy Pegs: Learn to Pedal (Ages 5-10)

Heritage Park, Shelter #5, 16000 S. Pflumm Road, Olathe, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to Noon, 5 sessions, $225 per person, $248 nonresidents

Perfect for kids who are not yet on two wheels (without the aid of training wheels). Even though some children start the week nervous, most campers will be pedaling confidently on their own by day two, thanks to our compassionate, patient, and FUN coaches. This camp is run by certified Buddy Pegs coaches who will ensure all kids individually progress in their skills and double their excitement for biking throughout the week! Participants may bring their own bike or rent a bike. Activity number 25052.

 

July 10-14 - Biking: Buddy Pegs Mountain Bike Camp (Ages 5-10)

Cedar Niles Park Trailhead, 25117 West 119th Street, Olathe, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to Noon, 5 sessions, $225 per person, $248 nonresidents

Perfect for beginner, intermediate, and advanced trail riders. Bike coaching includes: brake, modulation using front and back brakes, steering in control, looking ahead, bike body separation, ready position, riding in a group, front wheel lifts, climbing and descending safely, and yielding to other trail users. Off-the-bike activities include bike cleaning and maintenance, bike safety checks, and bike themed games and crafts. Operated by certified Buddy Pegs coaches who are known for their patient, compassionate, and fun teaching style. Children are grouped by ability level based on the Buddy Pegs Paw Rating System. Participants may bring their own bike or rent a bike. Activity number 25084.

 

July 10-14 - Biking: Buddy Pegs Bike Adventure Camp (Ages 5-10)

Heritage Park, 16000 S. Pflumm Road, Olathe, 9 a.m. to Noon, 5 sessions, $225 per person, $248 nonresidents

Perfect for kids who are ready to crank out bike adventures and improve safe riding skills on wide multi-use trails and low traffic neighborhood streets. Riding adventures away from base camp will highlight with distances varying by ability level each day (children grouped by ability level)! Bike skills taught include: brake modulation, emergency braking, steering in control, riding in a group, riding up and down hills, traffic safety, and yielding to other trail users. Super fun on-the-bike and off-the-bike games and craft activities round out the week. This camp is all about safety and fun on two wheels! No training wheels allowed. Participants may bring their own bike or rent a bike. Activity number 25073.

 

July 10-21 - TIP Mainstage: Introduction to Technical Theatre  (Ages 12-16)

Johnson County Arts & Heritage Center, 8788 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., 10 sessions, $405 per person, $440 nonresidents

In this two-week camp, participants will get hands-on experiences from the tech perspective of theatre. Some activities will include scene shop safety, prop construction, scenic construction of a mini stage flat, introduction to sound and lighting design, and exploring hands-on painting techniques. Students will create a design for a scene from their favorite show. Students will test the skills they learn during the class by challenging each other in Tech Olympic style events such as cable wrapping, costume quick change, drop folding, knot tying, props shifts, and more! The final Friday will have an open house to share their projects from the week with families. This camp is PERFECT for anyone interested in creating theatre magic backstage! Activity number 26694.

 

July 11-13 - Multi-Sport Skill Building Clinics (Grades K-1, 2-3, 4-5, or 6-8 )

Okun Fieldhouse at Mid-America West Sports Complex, 20200 Johnson Dr., Shawnee, Tuesday through Thursday, times vary, 3 sessions, $60 per person, $66 nonresidents

Don't know which sport to sign up for this summer? Why not try them all? This clinic allows your child test out three different sports, basketball, soccer, and flag football to see what they like best. Participants will play a two-hour session of a different sport each day. The first half of each day will put your kids through various skill building drills and ending with a scrimmage. K-1 session, 10 a.m. to noon, activity number 26500; Grades 2-3 session, 10 a.m. to noon, activity number 26495;  Grades 4-5 session, noon to 2 p.m., activity number 26496; and Grades 6-8, noon to 2 p.m., activity number 26499.

 

July 11 - Cards: Bridge Workshops – Slam Bidding with Gerber & Blackwood (Ages 50 & Older)

Matt Ross Community Center, 8101 Marty St., Overland Park, 4 to 6 p.m., $12 per person, $13 nonresidents

July 12 - Museum: Retro Storytime - “When Bunny Grows Up” (All Ages)

Johnson County Arts & Heritage Center, 8788 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park, All Ages, 10 a.m. to 10:45 a.m., $2 per person, $1.60 members

Preschoolers love stories from long ago, read by a special guest from the 1950s All-Electric House! Craft activity included after the story ends. Originally published in 1955, “When Bunny Grows Up,” written by  Patricia M Scarry and illustrated by Richard Scarry, tells the story of a bunny who wants to be just like his dad when he grows up. July 12 - Pickleball: Intermediate Drilling (Ages 18 & Older)

Meadowbrook Park Pickleball Courts, 9101 Nall Ave., Prairie Village, Wednesdays, 7 to 8:30 p.m., 4 sessions, $52 per person, $55 nonresidents

June 12 - Day Trip: Cleared for Takeoff, Kansas City (Ages 50 & Older)

Departs from Antioch Park, 6501 Antioch, Merriam, 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., $103 per person

Take a guided tour of the Kansas City Museum and hear about the city's evolution and spirit. Walk the halls of current exhibits and admire the beautiful architecture within its walls. After lunch, take an interactive guided tour of the TWA Aviation Museum. Hear about the influence that Trans World Airlines had on Kansas City. Activity number 26689.

 

July 12 - Early Learning: Cooks and Books (Ages 2-5 with an Adult)

Meadowbrook Park Clubhouse, 9101 Nall Ave, Prairie Village, 10:30 to 11 a.m., $4 per person, $5 nonresidents

Enjoy the reading of a favorite children's book and make a coordinating craft. A recipe for an easy, kid-friendly snack will be given out. Activity number 26817.

 

July 13 - Adventure Walk: Green Hills of Platte Wildlife Preserve (Ages 50 & Older)

Departs from Antioch Park, 6501 Antioch, Merriam, 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., $25 per person, $27 nonresidents

Head North of the river for a fun morning exploring the Green Hills of Platte Wildlife Preserve. This will be a moderate walk with a few inclines on a natural/gravel trail. Next on the agenda will be to enjoy a late breakfast at a local restaurant. Breakfast costs on your own. Activity number 26814.

 

July 14-16 & July 19-22 - Irving Berlin’s “White Christmas” at Theatre in the Park (Rated PG)

7710 Renner Road, Shawnee, 8:30 p.m., Tickets are $10 (plus tax) for general admission, $6 (plus tax) for youth (Ages 4-10), Children 3 & under are FREE (but require a ticket.)
