Listen to what what past campers and their families are saying:

- "Kala art camp for kids is GREAT! Our daughter just finished Kindergarten when she attended. She had a great time. We wish we had signed up for 2 weeks! Next summer we will."

- "It was beautiful to watch. I'm so thankful (on my daughter's behalf) that she had this opportunity - it far exceeded our expectations!"

- "The staff were quite talented and able to guide the kids in doing some really complex projects -- the campers were very proud of their work."

- "My incoming 1st-grade daughter just finished a week of Camp Kala, and it was fantastic. She loved it, and came home each day excited to return the next morning."

- "The instructors enabled the kids to explore with materials and styles; provided input, guidance, and support (without being overbearing); and helped the kids start thinking about their own interests and characters as artists."

Printing on Handmade Paper

2 Sundays, May 4 &11 (10am -1pm)

Instructor: Whitney Humphreys

San Pablo Community Classroom

Papermaking is a craft with a rich legacy and deep ties to art practices including printmaking and book arts. In this 2-part workshop, we will explore methods for making our own paper from recycled materials as well as an introduction to relief printmaking on unique surfaces. Students will learn the basics of paper making, using pulp made from paper waste and incorporating natural fiber materials. Using these, we will practice carving and printing from linoleum blocks to create an edition of handmade paper prints. With knowledge of processes for paper making and relief printmaking, students will gain a deeper appreciation for the production of the materials artists use, as well as inspiration and skills to continue exploring the interrelated crafts of print and book arts. No experience needed – all levels are welcome!

Intro to Cyanotype: Printing & Toning with Botanicals

4 Wednesdays, May 7 - 28 (6 - 9 pm)

Instructor: Christine Huhn

Heinz Printmaking Studio

In this class, students will be given a brief introduction to the cyanotype printing process using both negatives and found objects. Historically, cyanotypes were toned with both harmful chemicals and environmentally safe botanicals including teas and herbs. These materials alter the typically known blueprints and allow for a wider range of colors. Students will experiment with different botanicals, papers, and textiles to create unique imagery.
