BY MY SIDE, celebrates our veterans and their love of country and family. The film shows how and why service dogs – who match their loyalty and commitment – can heal broken hearts and quiet the wars within. That is the message our veterans and their families want others to know. There is hope and it can be found on the end of a leash.

This project is supported in part by UC Berkeley Chancellor's Community Partnership Fund.

In Loving Memory of Tom Foster (1947-2025)

Tom Foster, a long-time friend of Kala and beloved board member died earlier this month at his home in Coos Bay, Oregon. Tom’s life was defined by his generosity, work ethic, devotion to community, and his love for people. Tom began his railroad career at the age of 18 and dedicated 49 years to the railroad industry. Tom lived with purpose and extraordinary generosity. He had a gift for making others feel seen, supported, and valued. His passion for helping others was a constant thread throughout his life, as was his unwavering support of education, the arts, and community service. He served on the board of the Coos Art Museum and for 20 years was a dedicated Kala board member. We are so glad that he found his way to Kala in the 1980s where he met co-founder Archana Horsting and they became fast friends. In Archana's own words "Tom helped Kala grow, cross important bridges, and survive now into our 51st anniversary. He was great at crisis management with an ability to see many people's point of view. I'm really not sure how we would have managed without his wisdom."

A memorial service, conducted by Pastor Gene Armstrong, will be held in Bidwell, Ohio, at Mt. Carmel Church, May 31, 2025, at 2pm. A celebration of Tom’s life will also take place at Black Market Gourmet in Coos Bay, Oregon, on June 7, 2025, at 2pm. We will miss you Tom! Our love goes out to his wife Carol and to all of Tom's wonderful friends and family.
