From: Martha's Vineyard Film Society
Warm Greetings,
This week brings a quieter pace to Island life, with our community's schools taking their winter breaks. For families and educators, so well deserved. Yet at the Film Center we continue to roll out Oscar nominated films for your viewing pleasure, like ALL THE BEAUTY AND THE BLOODSHED, nominated for Best Documentary of 2022. In Laura Poitras new film, artist Nam Goldin mixes art with activism with startling results.
NEW THIS WEEK...
ALL THE BEAUTY AND THE BLOODSHED - Directed by Academy Award-winning filmmaker Laura Poitras, All the Beauty and the Bloodshed is an epic, emotional and interconnected story about internationally renowned artist and activist Nan Goldin told through her slideshows, intimate interviews, ground-breaking photography, and rare footage of her personal fight to hold the Sackler family accountable for the opioid overdose crisis.
CONTINUING THIS WEEK...
LET IT BE MORNING is the story of Sami (Alex Bakri) a Palestinian-born Israeli citizen living in Jerusalem who receives an invitation to his brother’s wedding forcing him to return to the Arab village where he grew up. After the wedding finishes, with no explanation, Sami’s hometown is put under a military blockade lockdown by the Israeli government. Despite its melodramatic story, the movie also has dashes of humor and social commentary that are fairly bold and quite poignant. Anchored by Bakri’s complex performance, Let It Be Morning was directed by acclaimed Palestinian-Israeli auteur Eran Kolirin (THE BAND’S VISIT).
WOMEN TALKING — Do nothing. Stay and fight. Or leave. In 2010, the women of an isolated religious community grapple with reconciling a brutal reality with their faith. For years, the men have occasionally drugged the women and then raped them. The truth comes out and the women talk about their new situation. Sarah Polley’s film has been nominated for Best Picture and Adapted Screenplay Oscars, and co-stars Frances McDormand, Rooney Mara, Jessica Buckley, Judith Ivey, and Claire Foy.
NOMINATED OSCAR SHORTS — LIVE ACTION, ANIMATION, & DOCUMENTARY. For the 18th consecutive year, the Film Society presents the Oscar-Nominated Short Films. With all three categories rotating – Animated, Live Action and Documentary – this is your annual chance to predict the winners (and have the edge in your Oscar ballot)! A perennial hit with audiences around the country and the world, don’t miss this year’s selection of shorts. Playing until the Academy Awards on Sunday, March 12th. Martha’s Vineyard has become an epicenter of Documentary producing in the last 10 years with many prominent filmmakers residing here part-time throughout the year -- Stanley Nelson, Dawn Porter, Kate Davis & David Heilbroner, Davis Guggenheim, Dan Cogan & Liz Garbus, and Geralyn Dreyfous to just name just a few.
This year's Oscars shine a light on the Oscar nominated documentary, NAVALNY (with Vineyard connections), having been executive produced by Nina & David Fialkow and Jim & Susan Swartz. All are prominent seasonal Vineyard residents and philanthropists. You might remember this same team won an Oscar for ICARUS a few years back. Nina Fialkow is also just coming off chairing the Mass Cultural Council under Governor Baker for the last four years -- a real advocate for Mass cultural arts
non-profits.

When chaos erupts overnight amongst the villagers stuck behind the wall due to the blockade, Sami is cut off from the outside world and trapped in an unexpected situation. As he deals with questions about his own identity and hidden secrets are revealed, Sami watches everything he holds dear begin to fall apart. Written and directed by award-winning Israeli filmmaker Eran Kolirin (The Band’s Visit), and adapted from the international best-selling novel by Palestinian author Sayed Kashua, LET IT BE MORNING is a film about a state of siege, both internal and external – centered around a man who has built a wall around his heart, and how that inner wall starts coming apart when an actual, real wall goes up around his hometown.

Alex Garland, writer of "28 Days Later" and "Sunshine", makes his directorial debut with the stylish and cerebral thriller, Ex Machina (2014). Caleb Smith (Domhnall Gleeson), a programmer at an internet-search giant, wins a competition to spend a week at the private mountain estate of the company’s brilliant and reclusive CEO, Nathan Bateman (Oscar Isaac). Upon his arrival, Caleb learns that Nathan has chosen him to be the human component in a Turing Test—charging him with evaluating the capabilities, and ultimately the consciousness, of Nathan’s latest experiment in artificial intelligence.
