Alison Pebworth: Cultural Apothecary
B6, The Robert W. Wilson Building
For more than a decade, Alison Pebworth has been inspired by a 19th-century neurological disorder called Americanitis. With vague and capacious symptoms ranging from abnormal fatigue to premature baldness, a diagnosis of Americanitis essentially pathologized the anxiety and ennui that plagued many Americans in the wake of industrialization and urbanization. Pebworth’s Cultural Apothecary asks us to consider the root causes of the cultural ills that contribute to our anxiety today, and to work together towards tools for healing. Her installation at MASS MoCA offers an experimental space for embodied, in-person connection, curiosity, and exploration as an antidote to division, loneliness, and isolation.
Coming Up
Representation & the Public Record
Saturday, March 15, 9:30am–5pm
This full-day convening will bring together artists, historians, and designers to draw out the intersection of two key themes: how individuals and groups are represented in public discourse, media, and institutions, and the role of public records in shaping this representation. The day will include presentations and conversations with artists delving into practical aspects of investigative journalism, archival research methods, and data analysis. Presenters include Bilal Ansari, Heather Hart, Michael Hartman, Jeffrey Gibson, Steve Locke, Jami Powell, and Nate Young.
Family Storytime
Saturday, March 15, 10:30am
Families with children up to 6 years old are invited to join MASS MoCA Museum Educators for a storytime and related exploration in the galleries. Each storytime will feature a different children’s book about contemporary art, creativity, and/or the themes of the exhibitions on display. A brief gallery walk-through and discussion of the art will follow.
This free program is in partnership with the North Adams Public Library.
