Meals on Wheels America News: Funding At Risk - Here’s What You Need To Know

Clubs and Organizations

Thanks to advocates like you, we’ve been able to push back on threats to Meals on Wheels funding. Your voice has helped protect lifesaving support for millions of older Americans — and we are grateful.

Now, we want to keep you updated on what is happening in Washington. This week, the House of Representatives passed the Senate’s budget blueprint as part of the ongoing reconciliation process that could put critical programs like Meals on Wheels at risk. While nothing is final, the blueprint sets the stage for:

-- Eliminating the Social Services Block Grant — a key funding source for many Meals on Wheels providers.

-- Major cuts to SNAP and Medicaid — which would increase food insecurity and hardship and increase demand for Meals on Wheels services.

Here’s how you can help today:

Funding from the Social Services Block Grant helps fill the gaps where Older Americans Act funding falls short — gaps that are getting wider as the senior population grows. If this funding is eliminated, hundreds of providers in at least 37 states may be forced to turn seniors away or extend the wait seniors currently face just to receive nutritious meals and relief from isolation.

In reality, Meals on Wheels reduces costs on the American health care system by keeping older adults healthy, independent and out of expensive facilities. In fact, Meals on Wheels can serve a senior for a full year for about the same cost as one day in the hospital or 10 days in a nursing home.

Thank you for staying engaged and standing up for millions of older Americans. We’ll continue to monitor developments closely and will keep fighting to protect and strengthen support for Meals on Wheels providers in communities across the country.

Together, we can End the Wait™ for our aging neighbors who need us most.
