Miami-Dade County District 9 Newsletter - March 2023

Government and Politics

March 11, 2023

From: City of Miami

Dear neighbor,

The month of February was packed with community activities and announcements that contribute to the quality of life of our residents and businesses in District 9. In the month of February we celebrated Black History month, provided the community with enjoyable family events, and helped small businesses grow by providing grant money through District 9’s Mom and Pop Grants. Additionally, we announced a new Free Cell Phone Initiative for eligible Miami-Dade County residents, in partnership with The Figgers Foundation. This is a game-changing initiative that provides South Dade’s most vulnerable residents, such as homeless individuals, struggling families, and working-class Americans, with access to free internet and phone services. This gives them the tools to stay safe and connected with their family members.

In March, we celebrate Women’s History Month, and I personally want to congratulate all the wonderful women who live, work and play in District 9.

Thank you for being the beacon of light in our communities.

Please read on for more information on the many happenings in our district!

Thank you,

Kionne McGhee
Commissioner, Miami-Dade County District 9

The McGhee Connect Programs Keeps Families Safe
Commissioner McGhee announced the new McGhee Connect Program, which offers a free cell phone and one year of service to eligible residents of Miami-Dade County District 9. Commissioner McGhee is proud to partner with The Figgers Foundation to keep residents connected. The McGhee Connect Program is a step towards ensuring that equitable digital opportunities exist for all Miami-Dade County residents, regardless of economic hardship, and seeks to bridge the digital gap that currently exists in South Dade. Honoring Miami-Dade Police Department Sergeant Jermaine Thomas Brown
There are no words that can express the honor it is to be able to complete this much deserved and awaited recognition for our dear friend and brother Sergeant Jermaine Thomas Brown, killed in the line of duty. Thank you Miami-Dade Police Department, South Florida Police Benevolent Association, #TeamMcGhee for their amazing work to make this happen.

Commissioner McGhee receives the 2023 Complete Streets Champion Award
The Commissioner believes that in order to improve the quality of life in our community, it is important to focus our attention on transportation and the safety of our streets. As the Chair of the Miami-Dade Transportation Planning Organization (TPO) Non-Urban Core Task Forces, he was able to create and implement three projects through the SMART Street Transportation Enhancement Program (STEP). These projects represent the needs of the South Dade community and will improve safety for all while increasing connectivity for residents.

Wings Over Homestead Air Show returns to the Homestead Air Reserve Base!

This past month, Commissioner McGhee also announced the return of the Wings Over Homestead Air Show to the Homestead Air Reserve Base! This Free family event will take place on April 1 and 2, 2023. We are very excited to help bring this amazing South Dade community event back to life!

Congratulations Dr. Reverend Alphonso Jackson, Sr.!
The Commissioner was honored to join you and your beautiful family on this very special day, the grand opening of a new business in District 9, PrimerTimers Event Center. We wish you much success!

Commissioner McGhee participates in the National Organization of Black County Officials Legislative Conference in Washington D.C.
As the president of the National Organization of Black County Officials (NOBCO), Commissioner McGhee participated in the organization’s Legislative Conference in Washington D.C. NOBCO is a vital platform for our community to come together, share ideas, and address the unique challenges that African Americans face in their roles as public servants. We are looking forward to bringing the conference to Miami-Dade County this summer!
