Michigan Republican Oversight Committee Once Again Abuses Power to Attack Political Enemies

Following in Trump’s dangerous footsteps, MAGA Matt Hall is weaponizing his position for political persecution

LANSING — Earlier on April 15th, MAGA Matt Hall’s pet Oversight Committee announced it was giving itself even broader subpoena power, changing committee rules to give themselves the ability to depose witnesses in private settings and the discretion to decide what information they receive can be deemed confidential. Despite their moves to shift the committee’s work behind closed doors, Oversight Republicans still tried to claim these changes were made under the guise of transparency. Following this rule change, Chair of the Michigan Democratic Party Curtis Hertel released the following statement:

“Under Matt Hall, state House Republicans gave themselves unprecedented power to investigate political opponents with this new sweeping subpoena power. While it comes as no surprise that they’re following Trump’s lead, it is still deeply disconcerting that Hall is abusing his power for political witch hunts.

“This is a gross overstep by the House Oversight Committee, plain and simple. If Hall really cared about transparency, he would’ve sent FOIA reform to Governor Whitmer for signature, but we all know that this is really about political persecution, not good government.”
