VA004 - Keep It Simple, but Pack a Punch
Full-Day Workshop - $90
9 am - 4 pm, Thursday, February 27
Learn the secrets to creating beautifully simple but compelling quilts. We will discuss color, values, and design concepts keeping in mind that "simple" often makes a more powerful statement than "busy." This class will teach improv curved piecing. Some simple fusing and couching may be added. Bring your hand-dyed, commercial prints, silks, and batiks. Gradients (ombres) are especially effective for this type of quilt. We will cut and piece our quilts. Quilting and facing will be demonstrated and discussed. All Levels
Students to Provide
Fabric - Choose simple solid fabrics, gradients, ombres, or hand dyes in your favorite colors. We will be making a quilt approximately 25” x 36”. One yard of gradient (ombre) will work or you may use two half yards of coordinating fabrics for the background. 5-7 fat eighths of various colors, and textures for pieced rectangles. Think of value and be sure to add fabrics in related colors of several values.
Sewing Machine - Please have your sewing machine in good working order and set up before class. Also, have your manual available. Your machine must have zig-zag capability and know how to raise and lower the feed dogs.
Zig-Zag presser foot, also a cording foot or braiding foot for couching is good to have. I like the Bernina #21 but any open-toe zig-zag foot will work. Fabric scissors, rotary cutter, cutting mat, small iron, and ironing surface.
Optional - If you will be couching: Any yarn which coordinates or contrasts with your fabrics in 3 or 4 colors. Thickness does not matter as we will double or triple the thin yarn. I like to use Madeira Supertwist (available in class, $12) as my top thread. You may use your preferred thread in the bobbin.
Fusible - Optional:
Mistyfuse (available in class, $10) or fusible of your choice. Single Cone Thread Stand
Large Starbucks Straw, masking tape to tape it to the top of your machine. This is to help feed your yarnStabilizer – any sew in stabilizer. I use Pellon 806 Stitch ‘n Tear.

VA005 - Architecture Quilt
Full-Day Workshop - $90
9 am - 4 p, Friday, February 28
Learn to create vibrant and playfully colorful architecture quilts with proper perspective. Yu will resize your photo before class (instructions in the supply list). It is important that you choose an image that is not too complicated for this one-day class. You will trace your image and learn to do fused raw edge applique. Basic straight stitching with monofilament or matching thread is used to stitch down all elements before quilting. Quilting and facing will be demonstrated and discussed. All Levels
Students to Provide
Fused Quilt - You will base your quilt on a photograph of a building or neighborhood. Decide how large you want your quilt to be then increase your photograph to that size (see below). I recommend Rapid Resizer – price ranges from $39 - $119 per year. It has a lot of features I use for other things so I have the Pro Version. https://www.rapidresizer.com/ I made a little tutorial for how to use Rapid Resizer which you may watch
here: https://vimeo.com/527980039/df97a6862a
None of the above options work for you? Many of you have the Microsoft Paint app on your computer and I found this clear step-by-step tutorial - https://www.digitalcitizen.life/print-large-image-multiple-pages-4-steps-using-microsoft-paint. It shows you how to print a large image on multiple pieces of 8.5″ x 11″ paper in Paint then tape the pieces together. I just uploaded my image, changed it to fit 2 x 2 pages in the Print settings just like they instructed. That made my image twice as large. It was a little blurry but worked very well. You can then tape the picture on a window, tape some tracing paper or freezer paper over the picture, take your sharpie and trace.
Please do this ahead of time so we can hit the ground running in class. If you have questions or get stuck email me and I will be happy to help you. [email protected]
Choose fabrics for your main building(s) and sky. I like to use gradients for my buildings but you may use prints, hand dyes or batiks. Choose colorful fabrics for your windows and doors, awnings, roof.
Backing fabric
Batting - I use Quilter’s Dream Poly Select Glide thread
Aurifil – cotton 50 wt. for piecing MistyFuse
Small Iron
Parchment Paper – Reynolds or Teflon Sheet
Freezer Paper – Reynolds, or tracing paper will also work Small 18mm Rotary Cutter, Cutting mat and ruler
Small very sharp scissors – I like the Karen Kay Buckley scissors with the blue handles.
Pigma Micron 005 Pen – black or Staedtler Permanent Lumocolor Pen
- black Sharpie pen
I look forward to seeing you in the class!

VA006 - Twists and Curves Quilt
Full-Day Workshop - $90
9 am - 4 pm, Saturday, March 1
Did you ever wish you could create a free form art quilt featuring movement and flow? Learn to make this vibrant quilt full of depth and flowing lines. We will learn how to do curved piecing, fused applique, and couching (stitching yarn to the surface of the quilt). A pattern for the above quilt will be provided in class. You will choose 3 main hand-dyed or ombre fabrics for your background then create your circles from coordinating batiks and hand dyed fabrics. Supply list provided. All Levels
Students to Provide
Paper pattern: to be provided in class. This is a 20” x 26” finished quilt.
Fabric: Choose a limited color palette. 3 basic colors work best, and you may have different values of those colors.
3 - ½ yard pieces of background fabric. I highly recommend choosing hand dyed fabrics which read as solids but have some mottling. You may choose gradient (ombre) fabrics. Look for two of the colors to be directly across the color wheel for the best effect.
6-7 fat quarters of batik or more textured hand dyed fabrics for the circles. Striped batiks are always fun. 3-5 coordinating colors of yarn, any thickness.
1 yard - Backing and facing fabric One 22” x 28” piece of batting.
Please bring some scrap fabric, batting and backing to practice couching – 12” x 12” is fine.
Thread:
Your favorite piecing thread in coordinating colors – I like Aurifil #40 or #50 Coordinating colors of your favorite quilting threads – I like Glide, Isacord, or Floriani. 3 coordinating colors of Madiera Super Twist #30. I will have some for sale in class. Optional: Aurifil Invisible Thread for the bobbin when couching.
Notions:
Freezer paper – 2 sheets, 18” x 28”
Parchment Paper – 2 pieces 15” x 24” DO NOT buy cheap generic brands, only use Reynolds. The cheap brands will permanently stick to your fabric and you will not be happy.
Mistyfuse – one package of 20” x 2.5 yards is plenty. I will also have some for sale in class.
Sharpie Pen for tracing the pattern onto freezer paper.
Marking pencil or chalk for fabric. You may wish to bring two – one for darks, one for lights.
Rotary cutter with extra blades. We will be cutting fabric and paper.

DAVID OWEN HASTINGS
VA015 - Inspired by Architecture
Full-Day Workshop - $135
9 am - 4 pm, Thursday, February 27
David will guide you through a creative process for designing your own modern abstract quilts, taking inspiration from architectural photos to develop dynamic and unique quilt designs.
MONUMENTAL INSPIRATION WITH UNLIMITED POSSIBILITIES
Working from photos of architectural elements, David will guide you through the steps to design a mini modern fabric quilt… inspired by architecture! You will learn the quilt-as-you-go method, sewing the top pieces, batting and backing simultaneously. You’ll then add texture and complexity with David’s unique approach to walking foot machine quilting where the quilting lines become a major design element. Learn to connect multiple quilted units with a great gusset join technique, then add a simple face binding for a modern finish.
A PDF materials and supplies list will be emailed in advance.
WORKSHOP DETAILS
Experiment with different elemental geometric shapes, including gentle curves
Explore spare, simple compositions for a modern look
Think about figure and ground
Consider the sewing lines as a key design element
Select 1-2 photos, and break them down into elemental shapes with tracing paper and pencil
Assess which compositions work well, and choose one to translate into fabric
Discuss color and value choices and decide on a palette
Map out pieces for one composition
Label and cut out cardboard pattern pieces, or cut pieces improv style
Audition colors and placement
Translate pattern pieces into fabric, leaving a generous amount of extra fabric for seam allowances
Build composition with the quilt-as-you-go method, trying out multiple fabrics, stepping back to assess the effect of each
Add texture and surface design with layered walking foot quilting motifs
Watch demos of facing a quilt for a modern look and joining finished quilt blocks with a great gusset join technique (2 handouts will be provided)
A complete PDF supply list with architectural photos will be emailed to each participant. Class sizes are limited to ensure one-on-one time. This is an all-levels workshop. You should be comfortable using your sewing machine, and it should be in good working order. Basic knowledge of walking foot quilting is helpful, but not necessary. I look forward to sharing and sewing with you!
For more about David, please visit www.davidowenhastings.com or follow @davidowenhastings on Instagram.
Students to Provide
3 photos of architecture that you like: Please have color hard copies of the images you like best, we may cut them up. Think about simple, graphic images: detail shots work well. You may use the photos included in the provided PDF if you prefer.
6–8 solid neutral fabrics: fat quarters work well. Choose solid quilting cotton in black, tan, grey, and white. Neutrals only. Very subtle textures are OK but no strong prints, please. You do not need to match the colors in your photos.
3–4 solid accent fabrics: small scraps of solid accent fabrics. Choose strong, bright, modern colors. Subtle textures are OK.
3 pieces of backing fabric: cut into 14" x 14" squares. A dark quilting cotton (like black or grey) with an open weave works great. Have extra fabric if you’d like to try facing your mini quilt.
3 pieces of cotton quilt batting: cut into 13" x 13" squares.
Cotton sewing thread for piecing in a neutral color, like medium grey. I prefer 50 wt. thread.
TOOLS/EQUIPMENT
Home sewing machine with walking foot
Rotary cutter with a fresh blade
Utility knife or X-Acto knife
Scissors for paper and fabric shears
Seam ripper (just in case!)
Pins
Cutting mat
Quilting ruler
Add-A-Quarter ruler (optional)
Chalk pencils and/or Chaco Liner
Black Sharpie and a pencil with an eraser
Paper for sketching: copy paper will work, cut into quarters
2 sheets of white copy paper + a stapler
Tracing paper: 14" x 17" size or a 15" roll of baking parchment paper works, too
12" x 12" thin cardboard for pattern making: a flattened cereal box or file folder is perfect for this, but any thin cardboard that you can cut easily with scissors or a utility knife will work. Tape together smaller pieces if needed to make a 12" x 12" square.
Smartphone with camera or digital camera to take photos as you work

VA016 - Seams Out Quilted Pillow
Full-Day Workshop - $135
9 am - 4 pm, Friday, February 28
Add surface texture and design to a modern quilted pillow by including the quarter-inch seams on the outside.
Make a modern and tactile quilted pillow
We usually hide our quarter-inch seam allowances on the back of our quilts, but that’s a missed opportunity for design and texture. In the Seams-Out Quilted Pillow workshop, we’ll make those seams an integral part of the design, adding an artistic touch.
We will make two strip sets, slice and splice them together, and then use the quilt-as-you-go technique and a walking foot to quickly create sumptuous, quilted fabric. Next, we’ll turn that fabric into the front and back of a fabulous, quilted pillow. You’ll also learn to put in an invisible zipper! Participants will receive guidance for choosing fabric colors, textures and printed designs that allow the seams-out texture to really shine. Once you have the technique down, you can apply the seams-out idea to all kinds of quilted projects.
WORKSHOP DETAILS
Choosing complimentary fabrics for an attractive result
Sewing strip sets with seams on the front
Quilt-as-you-go method, using your domestic machine and a walking foot
How to sew an invisible zipper
Precision sewing tips for a professional finish
A complete PDF supply list will be provided. Class sizes are limited to ensure one-on-one time.
This is an all-levels class. You should be comfortable using your sewing machine and walking foot (or dual feed), and both should be in good working order. Basic knowledge of walking foot quilting is helpful, but not necessary. We will learn together!

Students to Provide
Fabric: 7–8 fat quarters in one color family (analogous) with similar values: for example, all cobalt blues. Visit David’s website for example fabric selections: https://davidowenhastings.com/portfolio/workshop-seams-out-quilted-pillow/
Printed fabric shows this technique best! Select printed fabrics that appear tone-on-tone: low contrast designs with smaller prints or printed textures are perfect. You can have one highlight fabric that has a more prominent design. Quilting cotton is easiest to work with. (Batiks and flat solids do not show off the texture, avoid them.)
Iron your fabric: please pre-press and stack your fat quarters. Fat quarters measure about 18" x 21" or 18" x 22".
After pressing, roll them around a paper towel core or pool noodle to keep them nice and flat for the workshop.
Batting: standard cotton quilt batting (or 80/20 cotton/poly), two 21" x 21" pieces.
Backing/Lining: bring two 22" x 22" pieces of cotton fabric. Any fabric that goes with your fat quarters is fine.
Zipper: 18" (or longer) invisible plastic zipper in a color that is slightly darker than your fabric selection.
Quilting thread: in 3 colors that harmonize with your fabric selection. I like 40 or 50 weight Aurifil Cotton thread for the wide range of colors available, and Sulky Rayon which gives the threads a bit of shine.
20" pillow form: you do not need to bring this with you to in-person workshops, you can put it in at home.
OPTIONAL: 1.25 yards of fabric for backing if you’d like to make an envelope style pillow back instead of using a zipper. A good choice is to use one of the darker value fabrics that you’re using on the front of the quilted pillow.
Tools/Equipment:
Domestic sewing machine with walking foot, zipper foot, and quarter-inch seam allowance (or standard piecing) foot
Fresh machine sewing needles: I like to use Microtex Sharps 80/12 plus a 90/14 topstitch needle
Rotary cutter with a fresh blade
Small scissors and fabric shears, seam ripper
Cutting mat
24-inch quilting ruler
Fine Sharpie or fabric marking pen
Quilting pins
Wonder Clips (optional)
Wooden chopstick for turning

DAVID OWEN HASTINGS
VA017 - Mini Mid-Mod Quilts
Full-Day Workshop - $135
9 am - 4 pm, Saturday, March 1
These charming little quilts are inspired by Mid-Century Modern design, and are a great skill-building project to learn a number of quilting techniques.
Work small, Work smart, look great.
We will start with a simple, modern color palette of neutral fabrics with a flash of color. Clean lines combined with simple design give each tiny composition a sophisticated feeling. Since we are working very small, this is a great project for using small scraps and bits of special fabric.
Participants will learn the quilt-as-you-go method, and a PDF materials and supplies list will be emailed in advance. Hand stitching adds a sleek, linear element. Finishing techniques will be demonstrated, and participants will have time to finish a set of coasters, or a small wall quilt!
WORKSHOP DETAILS
Select a range of neutral fabrics (all light, medium or dark), and a bright accent color. Solids, and subtle, small-scale prints or textures work best.
Cut cotton batting and backing fabric into 5″ squares.
Cut a selection of the neutral fabrics into small strips (sizes will be provided).
Cut a small amount of the bright accent color fabric.
Learn the quilt-as-you-go technique, working from the inside out.
Explore strip piecing and leaving the raw edges on the outside for extra texture.
Trim your small quilt blocks and stay stitch the edges.
Learn about hand stitching, and experiment with adding your own design.
Sew the backing onto the top of your mini quilts, leaving a space for turning.
Turn and press, then do a final stitching around the perimeter.
A complete PDF supply list, plus step-by-step notes and templates will be emailed to each participant. Class sizes are limited to ensure one-on-one time. This is an all-levels class. You should be comfortable using your sewing machine, and it should be in good working order. I look forward to sharing and sewing with you! For more about David, please visit www.davidowenhastings.com or follow @davidowenhastings on Instagram.
Students to Provide
Cotton sewing thread: 40- or 50-weight, medium grey
Cotton batting: cut into 5" x 5" squares (cut 9–12)
Cotton backing: cut into 5" x 5" squares (cut 9–12)
6–8 neutral fabrics: choose solid or subtly printed quilting cotton fabrics in a neutral color family. Very subtle textures are OK but no strong prints, please. Choose colors in one family with similar values, such as ALL light grey, ALL medium grey, ALL black, ALL tan, ALL navy, etc. If you use prints, make sure they are very small and low-contrast. Yarn-dyed wovens are nice for this project and provide a texture contrast to the printed cottons. Cut into 4" x 6" pieces (cut 5–6 from each neutral fabric). Also bring 2 fat quarters extra, which you will use if you’d like to make a wall hanging.
Accent fabrics: choose strong, bright, modern colors. Solids or subtle textures/prints. Cut two: 4" x 6", cut one: 1.5" x 6", cut one: 1.25" x 6". (See provided PDF for additional cutting details and examples.)
#8 or #12 Perle hand quilting cotton thread
Please cut the 5" x 5" squares of backing and batting to size before class, so you can have as much time as possible to work on your mini quilts. You will receive a PDF handout with directions — the directions are notes for your reference to use during class. You do not need to do any sewing in advance.

No previous beading or embroidery experience is needed. You can make a unique brooch (pin), bracelet, or neckpiece using a focal bead surrounded by smaller beads in this class. You'll find using your creativity and beading techniques in your work so exciting you won't want to stop! All you need to bring to class is your creativity and enthusiasm. CARLY MUL
VA031 - Freestyle Color Collage
Full-Day Workshop - $100
9 am - 4 pm, Thursday, February 27
This class is an advanced class for color collage. Students will learn not only how to make lines in color, but also how to connect them by blending fabrics. It's a way to learn how to work with colors using the collage technique. The class is very open and unrestricted as there is no specific pattern or design to follow. The flow of the colors will create a pattern. During the class, students will work on their layout. No sewing machine is needed. I will guide every student in person and offer instructions how to finish at home. The result is an abstract art quilt. This is meant to be a wall-hanging on its own, or become part of a wall-hanging. All Levels
Required class kit, $15 payable to the instructor, includes one yard of Lite Steam a Seam 2 and Pattern ease. I want to make sure everyone has the correct fusible as others won't work. Pattern ease will become your workspace and stays in the final wall-hanging.
Students to Provide
As you will need many, many fabrics for this kind of collage and only a certain amount can be brought to class, select a colorway first that matches your stash. Select EITHER warm or cool colorway. Warm: mix of browns, yellows, oranges, corals, pinks, reds, red purples. Cool: mix of blacks, greys, blues, greens, teals and aquas, blue purple. Bring in your colorway of choice AT LEAST 150 scraps. These scraps can be anywhere between .5 and 5" and in any style of fabric, with the exception of solids. Solids will not work. You can mix batiks, reproduction, modern, traditional fabric in any random value. The more variety the better: don't try to match colors in advance. Don’t bring a charmpack, as you will have way too many fabrics in the same style. Bring big and small scale prints, multicolored and blender fabrics, really anything with, if possible, all colors of your colorway represented.
Sharp small scissors. Karen K Buckley no 5 (the blue one) is great for this class, but others may work as well. These scissors will be used to cut your scraps in even smaller pieces.
(3–optional) A small bag for your trash will come in handy.

VA032 - "Agamy" Stripes Class
Full-Day Workshop - $100
9 am - 4 pm, Friday, February 28
In this class students will learn to make a quilt in the style of the work of Yaagov Agam. Agam is a sculptor and his dynamic art is full of movement. You can look up his work on the internet and get inspired! It makes an interesting challenge for quilters to work with solids. In the class we will make a design by using fusible interfacing. This creative class is a mix of raw edge applique and collage. There will be no sewing, we are working on a layout. Instructions on how to finish it at home will be discussed. Students need to be able to cut consistent straight lines of .5".
All Levels
There will be two kits available:
Required class kit, $24 payable to the instructor in class, is the kit everyone needs to get. It includes 1 yard of the background stripe fabric and 1 yard of Lite Steam a Seam 2.
Optional class kit, $40 payable to the instructor in class: It would be really nice if we don't have to spend a lot of time in class on ironing fusible interfacing to the background. Some will have to be done, but fabrics already prepared with fusible could be handy. Some students will have 30 solids in their stash and they are advised to iron the fusible interfacing at home. IMPORTANT: ONLY LITE STEAM A SEAM 2 will work for class. If you have any other fusible interfacing or you don't know what you have, please bring only fabric. The class will NOT work with other fusibles!!
I can bring a (second) kit for students who order the kit in advance. This kit is optional as I want students who have the fabrics already being able to use their stash, if they choose so. The optional kit will have 30 pieces in size 4" x 6", already provided with the right fusible. All you would have to bring is a yard of black. Please contact me before the class if you would like to order this. This kit is $30.00.
Students to Provide
One yard of high quality black solid.
At least 30 solids in size 4" x 6". Any color combination can work. Bring ranges of colors, for instance 5 shades of blues, 5 reds etc. If you have scraps in solids laying around, you can bring those as well.
Try to bring high quality solids as some lower end solids are fraying too much when you cut thin stripes. Solid batiks work very well as well.
Mat, rotary cutter (with working blade) and a ruler that lets you cut .5" comfortably. Since no piece will be longer than 6", a small ruler works best.
Small scissors. Karen K Buckley's blue scissors is my choice.

VA039 - Westalee Let’s Quilt a Real Quilt with Rulers!
Full-Day Workshop - $75
9 am - 4 pm, Saturday, March 2
You’ve done plenty of “practicing” on little quilt sandwiches; now’s the time to work on a real quilt with seams, sashing, borders and real-world scenarios. Using a simple, traditional-type quilt, learn how to plan and pick your designs, learn to quilt in sections, if needed while dealing with normal quilt issues, getting around corners in the borders and whatever else happens when you quilt. None of this is very difficult, it’s just the next step and knowing the tips and tricks will make it go more easily for you. This is for All Levels – we’ll plan your quilt with that in mind. Note: All students will consult with me before class to give you the most learning potential in our class time and have you ready to work. Quilting in sections will give you great info for handling the bulky, bigger quilts. Last minute students can work on practice sandwiches or pre-printed block panels. All Levels Students to Provide
Your “good” sewing machine – make sure it’s cleaned and working well.
Ruler work supplies – Ruler foot options, Quilters table [need 3 weeks to order and ship],
Glider Sheet options and any Westalee ruler-work templates you own. [Link to current catalogs to check out rulers - Full Line and Quarterly Specials]
Most of you should have the Westalee WQTSS-6 Template Sampler Set 6 piece which has many design options or contact me to discuss what you have.
Mid-Atlantic Show Specials might be available on what you need, contact me to check. Optional – 8 point Crosshair Options, Westalee Border Sampler Set
A quilt to work on: Could be an existing quilt, with little to no quilting yet, or a new project- which you’ll do in sections. [You could also bring fat- quarter sized quilt sandwich to just practice designs].
You can bring more than one to start and plan if you’d like. [Top, backing and cotton batting] Send me a picture of your project[s] so we can do a little pre-planning [email protected] Questions? E-mail Adele at [email protected]
Note: I will have a few pre-printed “cheater panels for those without a project or last-minute sign-ups. [Picture/Price available to order starting 30 days before class.]All items are available from the website and/ or show booth, other than fabric, thread and batting. VA042 - Crossed Canoes
Full-Day Workshop - $85
9 am - 4 pm, Thursday, February 27
Paper piecing can be a quilter's challenge. There are so many ways to get it wrong, right? Wrong! I've taken the mystery out of paper piecing by making it easy to do and much faster and more efficient. But you'll have to be the judge of that. The actual "Crossed Canoes" block is quite simple. But the quilt top assembly needs to be precise. This quilt isn't just about the paper piecing, since all the blocks are identical except for color. The fun part is putting the blocks together. We'll be using a different method for precision where TWELVE pieces of fabric come together into a single point. So let's go canoeing. The project size is 44" x 44" without borders. So, let's go canoeing! All Levels
Required class kit, $5 payable to the instructor in class, includes pattern and printed materials.
Students to Provide
-- Your pre-cut HSTs and your pre-cut strips.
-- Pins, and just in case, a seam ripper
-- Rotary cutter (with a new blade) and ruler - 6"x12" works fine
-- Invisible Scotch Tape (any brand)
-- Pencil or pen for taking notes
-- A Hand Needle (embroidery, cotton darning) if it has a sharp point and a long eye
-- Small cutting mat 9" x 12" is fine
-- Highlighter (Pink, green, blue, orange, but NOT yellow)
-- Add-A-Quarter ruler (the longer the better)
-- Paper and fabric scissors
-- Something in which to collect your scraps
-- Oral B Pro-Health Comfort Plus Floss or any ribbon floss
FABRIC AND CUTTING SPECS:
Using two colors or fabrics highlight the impact of this pattern and makes learning the pattern much easier. High contrast fabrics really makes your quilt sing. Let’s not go overboard (pun intended) with lots of colors and patterns. Sometimes less IS more. Just pick two.
Each block measures 5-1/2" square, unfinished Start with 1-1/2 yards of each fabric.
First, cut your strips. You'll repeat the process for each of your two fabrics. Please bring the strips to class. Cut four 6" strips and two 7" strips from each fabric and bring them to class.
Before class:
Cut two 3-1/2" strips from each fabric.
Cut each strip into sixteen 3-1/2" squares.
Cut the squares in half diagonally to end up with thirty-two HSTs in each color/fabric. Bring those to class.
Patterns and all printed materials will be provided.

VA043 - Scrappy Chevron Star … Or Not
Full-Day Workshop - $85
9 am - 4 pm, Friday, February 28
This class is pure FUN! Why? Because we let go of our desire to “control” the outcome. After all, scrappy means using scraps of all different colors and patterns. For many of us paper piecing can be a quilting brain-teaser, right? Well if you love paper pieced projects but find the process somewhat “confusing”, then this is the class is for you. You’ll be learning my revolutionary “No More Tears” © method of paper piecing, and although you won’t be finishing the entire project in class, you should have at least one completed 12” x 12” star block and the tools you’ll need to finish your project at home. And it will take half the time you’d expect from paper piecing. Don’t believe me? Well, join the class and find out how!
All Levels
Required class kit, $5 payable to the instructor in class, includes patterns and printed materials.
Students to Provide
Your pre-cut fabric
Pins, and probably a seam ripper
Rotary cutter (with a new blade) and ruler, 6”x12” works fine
Small cutting mat 9 x 12 is fine
Add-A-Quarter Ruler (12” is ideal)
Paper Scissors and Fabric Scissors
Highlighter - any color except yellow
Hand needle with sharp point and long eye (embroidery, cotton darning)
Oral B Glide or any other RIBBON dental floss
Notes:
This project is perfect for using up some of your yardage, fabric scraps, fat quarters or jelly rolls. The reason this pattern works so well is because the star points are made of alternating lights and darks, two contrasting colors, patterned fabrics, or combinations of each. Two-color stars have a more “contemporary” look, whereas scrappy stars are more “traditional”. The background, however, is very controlled. If you use one fabric for the background, your stars will pop. Use two different fabrics and you’ll get a secondary pinwheel pattern. Just make sure that your background fabric(s) is in high contrast to your star fabric.
A word about design and fabric selection: Please, keep it simple, and keep in mind that we’re here to learn a new method, and maybe not design the ultimate Chevron Star masterpiece. Ideally, we’re looking for a variety of scraps or two contrasting fabrics* that allow the Chevron Star pattern to shine. The finished project will be simple to construct, yet impactful. Since practice makes perfect, we want to practice as much as possible during class. If we’re too focused on design, it takes away from our practice time.
* Contrasting fabric means any 2 fabrics that will stand out on their own and make the lines of your quilt top “crisp”. They can be solids, a print and a solid, or 2 small prints that read as solid from a distance. When selecting your fabric, avoid stripes, directional prints, large prints, or 2 prints that share a common color. You designate which of your fabrics are “A” and which are “B”.
Cutting Specs for Scrappy Stars:
Fabric “A” – 108 2” x 5 ½” rectangles.
Fabric “B” – 108 2” x 5 ½” rectangles.
Background Fabrics for pinwheel background
You will need 24” (includes a little extra) of both a lighter and darker fabric. They will be referred to as “BL” and “BD”. Then, cut four 4 ½” strips from each fabric.
From those strips cut:
“BL” (Background Light) Fabric - Cut thirty-six 4 ½” squares. Cut these in half diagonally to create seventy-two half square triangles. “BD” (Background Dark) Fabric - Cut thirty-six 4 ½” squares. Cut these in half diagonally to create seventy-two half square triangles.
Cutting Specs for Two-Color Stars
Start with 1 yard each of color “A” and color “B” (includes a little extra) Cut sixteen 2” strips from each color Cut each strip into 5½” rectangles, for a total of 108 of each color
Background Fabric for solid background
You will need 48” (includes extra) of your background fabric. Cut eight 4 ½” strips. From those strips cut thirty-six 4 ½” squares. Then cut the squares into half square triangles.

VA044 - Storm at Sea
Full-Day Workshop - $85
9 am - 4 pm, Saturday, March 1
Are you curious about paper piecing? Do you and paper piecing already have a love/hate relationship? Do you love the accuracy you achieve, but hate the process of getting there? Well, this class will change that to a LOVE relationship. We’ll be using the versatile Storm at Sea pattern to learn my “No More Tears” © method of paper piecing. Although we won’t be finishing the entire project in class, you’ll have a good start, and the tools you’ll need to finish it at home, in half the time you’d expect from paper piecing. Don’t believe me? You’ll just have to come and see for yourself.
All Levels
Required class kit, $5 payable to the instructor in class, includes pattern and printed materials.
Students to Provide
Your baggies of pre-cut fabric and some extra just in case
Rotary cutter with a fresh blade
6” x 12” ruler
Small cutting mat – 9” x 12” is fine.
Invisible Scotch tape (any brand)
Pencil or pen for taking notes.
A hand needle (embroidery, cotton darning) with a sharp point and long eye
Highlighter – any color except yellow
Add-A-Quarter ruler – 6” or 12”
Fabric and paper scissors
Something to collect your scraps.
Oral B Pro-Health Comfort Plus Dental Floss or any ribbon floss
A Word About Fabric: Please, keep it simple, and keep in mind that we’re here to learn a new method, and maybe not create the ultimate Storm at Sea masterpiece. Ideally, we’re looking for 2 contrasting** fabrics, and if you want, a third color, you’ll want to use a different fabric in the same color family as your dark fabric. Either way, your Storm at Sea will shine. The finished project will be simple to construct, yet impactful.
Why only 2 (or 3) fabrics? Because this class is less about design and more about technique. Like anything new we learn, we want it to become habit, and if we’re focused on design, it takes away from our practice time.
If you want to add a third color for more movement, I find that a variation of your “dark” fabric works well.
All fabric is cut cross grain or Width of Fabric (WOF). Measurements assume 40" of useable fabric. Bring cut pieces to class in three baggies...one for Large Center Squares, one for Sashing Rectangles, and one for Cornerstone Squares.
**Contrasting fabric means any 2 fabrics that will stand out on their own and make the lines of your quilt top “crisp”. They can be solids, a print and a solid, or 2 small prints that read as solid from a distance. Another thing to remember is that solid fabrics will be a little less forgiving if your points don't match precisely. When selecting your fabric, avoid directional prints, large prints, or 2 prints that share the same color(s).
Cutting Specs:
If you start with 2 yards of each fabric, you'll have enough left of the dark for your binding and enough left of the light for the backing. You'll be using
41.5" of dark fabric and 29" of light. If making a 3-color quilt, adjust the yardage as detailed in the cutting directions for Baggie #3.
Baggie #1 Large Center Squares: (9 total used for wall hanging)
From the Dark Fabric:
Cut one 4" strip. From this strip cut nine 4" squares.
Cut two 4-1/2" strips. From these strips cut eighteen 4-1/2" squares. Cut these eighteen squares diagonally in half to form thirty-six half-square triangles. Place them in Baggie #1.
From the Light Fabric:
Cut two 3-1/2" strips. From these strips cut eighteen 3-1/2" squares. Cut these eighteen squares diagonally in half to form thirty-six half-square triangles. Place them in Baggie #1.
Baggie #2 Cornerstone Squares: (16 total used for wall hanging)
From the Dark Fabric:
Cut one 2” strip. Cut this strip into sixteen 2” squares.
Cut two 3" strips. Cut these strips into thirty-two 3" squares. Cut these thirty-two squares diagonally in half to form sixty-four half-square triangles. (If you don't have enough fabric, use the remainder of the 4" strip from the Sashing Rectangle to make up the difference.) Place in Baggie #2
From the Light Fabric:
Cut two 2 1/4" strips. Cut these strips into thirty-two 2 1/4" squares. Cut these 32 squares diagonally in half to form sixty-four half-square triangles. Place in Baggie #2.
Baggie #3 Sashing Rectangles: (24 total used for wall hanging)
From the Dark Fabric:
Cut five 4" strips. Cut these strips into twenty-four 4"x7" rectangles. Place them in Baggie #3.
If using the third color, follow the cutting directions above and you’ll start with at least 20” of that fabric. From the Light Fabric:
Cut six 3" strips. Keep the strips folded, wrong sides together. Cut these strips into forty-eight 3"x5" rectangles. Cut these forty-eight rectangles diagonally in half to form ninety-six "uneven" or asymmetrical triangles. Place them in Baggie #3.
Note: Since these triangles are mirror images and asymmetrical, they have a precise placement in the block. It is important that you make sure to keep your fabric strip folded in half as it came off the bolt before cutting your rectangles and then triangles.

Fabric: Pre-washed cotton fabric, either plain or previously dyed. Amount determined by how fast you work – can be up to 6 yards. Smaller pieces are more manageable, so please cut a few of these into fat quarter sized pieces before class.
Fabric paint: You may use any fabric paints or textile inks you have. Thin/watery paints like Dynaflow will not work for printing, but they can be used to paint directly onto the fabric. Transparent paints work best. Linked below are paint starter kits available at Dharma and Pro Chem. If you don’t want to purchase a paint set, please bring at least black, white, and two of your favorite colors. https://www.dharmatrading.com/paints/kits/jacquard-textile-colors-traditional-starter- set.html?lnav=paints_kits.html, https://prochemicalanddye.com/product/12-pack-painters-palette-profab-transparent- paints/
A variety of textured found objects for patterning such as: wire whisks, construction fence, mesh from clementine boxes, leaves, string, rubber bands, corks, bubble wrap, kitchen sink mats, disposable plastic cake plate, paper towel tube, etc. Let your imagination run wild! Check out dollar stores and home improvement stores for fun things with patterns.
A wooden or acrylic block, approximately 4"x4" to make a stamp. (The block needs to be at least 1/8" thick, but can be thicker.) Plastic or eco-friendly spoons to get paint out of the jars.
Brushes: a few inexpensive foam brushes for painting (1”, 2” and 3” widths). A 4" to 6" foam paint roller (available at a hardware store).
A palette: a couple of styrofoam meat trays from the grocery store work great. An old yogurt or sour cream container to hold rinse water for your paint brushes.
A spray bottle for water. This can be a washed, recycled sprayer. It does not need to be new, but it does need to be clean. A small bucket and/or tray for carrying your tools to the utility sink for rinsing.
A roll of inexpensive large size garbage bags to lay under your fabrics while they air dry. Plan according to how much fabric you bring. Plastic tablecloths from the dollar store are also an option.
Use gloves and wear old clothes. Use an apron if desired. A nail brush will help clean paint from fingernails. Be sure to label ALL of your tools and brushes with your initials before bringing them to class.
Optional Items (i.e. you already own them or really want to try working with them): Purchased stamps, a silkscreen & squeegee, a Gelli Plate & brayer, Thermofax screens.

Fabric: Pre-washed cotton fabric, either plain or previously dyed. This does NOT need to be PFD fabric. You may also overprint commercially-printed fabrics.
Amount determined by how fast you work. Between 4 and 6 yards seems to work for the average student. Smaller pieces are more manageable, so please cut down a few fat quarter sized pieces (18”x22”) before class.

PAT YAMIN
VA052 - Full Day Mystery Class
Full-Day Workshop - $90
9 am - 4 pm, Thursday, February 27
Join Pat Yamin for a day of fun, sewing, lots of laughs, and the chance to meet new quilting pals. Since most of us dislike having to select and coordinate the fabric, do the rotary cutting and read instructions, Pat's pre-cut laser kits are the easiest and quickest way to create a Mystery Quilt. She will be there to explain directions and diagrams and will provide clues for each step along the way. The pattern is a mystery until the final clue is revealed. The block was designed by Pat who had all the laser cutting done with the 1/4" seam allowances.
Excess triangle points have already been eliminated. The end result will be great memories and a 48" x 60" quilt. This is the perfect class for everyone - you, your family, and your friends - so be sure to invite them to come with you for our all day quilting class! Beginner Level
Required class kit, $90 payable to the instructor in class, includes a complete laser cut quilt kit with diagrams and instructions for a 48" x 60" quilt.

PAT YAMIN
VA054 - Scrappy Quilts
Full-Day Workshop - $90
9 am - 4 pm, Saturday, March 1
At last year's Mid-Atlantic show, I offered Scrappy Quilts as a half-day class. It was so popular that many of you asked for a full-day class. I'm pleased to tell you that David Mancuso agreed to let me offer a full- day Scrappy Quilt class this year. It will surely fill up rapidly so sign on as soon as you can! Time to clean out those bins of fabric scraps just waiting patiently to be used in a quilt project. The fabrics that looked great on the bolt but when brought home weren't a good match to anything and got tossed in the scrap bin. For past Scrappy Quilts classes, many students selected themed fabric from the piles - i.e., Halloween, animal, or Christmas prints, and it isn't easy to figure out why some fabrics are rejected while others are collected! You'll find a variety of colors, prints, focus fabric, and batiks available in these classes and Pat is bringing a lot of her own rejects to add to the pile. She'll also have a variety of her templates for you to purchase for the quilt you'll create. *Important - This class is for the free spirit and takes advantage of impromptu design - it's not intended for those quilters who prefer formality. Beginner Level
Required class kit, $25 payable to the instructor in class, includes the templates and instructions.
Students to Provide
Sewing Machine, with cord and user manual
¼” foot for sewing machine Neutral color thread
Small Scissors
Rotary cutter and mat to cut on - if you have a turning mat bring it 6" x 12" ruler
Lots of scraps to exchange - all colors. You can make the quilt as big as you want!

Upcycling is the process of taking old or unwanted clothes and fabrics and making them new and exciting. I search thrift stores for the needed materials. Most of my clothing has lots of embellishments. Plain clothing is not my style. In this fashion show, you'll see men's shirts, neckties, T- shirts, VCR tape, CDs, and tin cans used to make dresses, coats, jackets, and skirts. Come see what I do and hopefully get inspired to use your creativity and imagination to jazz up your wardrobe.
