Mill Ballet School Alumna Elena Tawa to Dance with Alvin Ailey this December
Congratulations to Mill Ballet Alumna Elena Tawa on her upcoming performance of Memoria with the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre! Elena says she is "honored to be given this opportunity as a student to perform" alongside her peers and the main company. Memoria was choreographed by Alvin Ailey in memory of his close friend Joyce Trisler, and premiered in 1979 at New York City Center.
We asked Elena a few questions about what her experience has been like and what advice she could pass along to our students. Here is what she had to say:
1-Please tell us about the audition process.
At The Ailey school there are 7 ballet levels. In order to audition you had to be in level 5 or above. We are expected to be warm before entering the audition, so I arrived about 30 minutes early to warm up. The audition was separated into 4 groups of about 20 people, and was primarily in the Horton technique. We were taught a few combinations in the center, and traveling across the floor, and the whole process lasted about an hour.
2-What has been the highlight of this experience so far?
Rehearsals have yet to begin, but I am really excited to be on stage with the main company. I look forward to working with the other students selected and making magic on stage. It has always been a dream of mine to perform on the New York City Center stage, and I feel very proud of myself for making it happen!
3-What is your advice for young dancers who dream of having this experience one day?
Don't get discouraged when things don't happen as quickly as you would like them to, progress takes a lot of patience and time! Be kind to yourself! But most importantly, stay consistent and always be the hardest working person in the room.

Sugar Plum Story Time with Roxey Ballet
With our Sugar Plum Story Time, Roxey Ballet brings the magic of The Nutcracker magic right to your preschool! The Sugar Plum Fairy and other characters from The Nutcracker engage your students with a condensed reading of The Nutcracker, followed by excerpts from the ballet danced by the professional artists of the Roxey Ballet. Children will have an interactive experience learning the history of the music by Tchaikovsky, the craftsmanship of a costume and a ballerina’s pointe shoe, and how they too can tell stories through movement to music during a Nutcracker-themed dance class. For inquiries, please email [email protected].
