Doctor Martin L King Junior Annual Dreamfest Weekend

In celebration of the Rev. Dr. Martin L. King Jr. holiday weekend, we appreciate the opportunity to honor his legacy, focus on the issue of civil rights, and provide an opportunity for community service. We invite you to come out to each event.

Schedule of Events

January 1-February 9, 2023

12:00 PM - 5:00 PM: Food Drive

Join us in honoring the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. by volunteering to be a Donation Station during our month-long food drive. The Town will assist all volunteers in creating a safe way to accept nonperishable food donations for Dorcas Ministries ' community food pantry. The demand for short-term food support for Cary area families continues to rise, and we appreciate your help!

Registration is open until Feb. 9. through My Cary: MLK Dreamfest Food Drive. All registered volunteers will receive a Food Donation Station E-Kit via email a few business days later. The E-Kit includes complete instructions on how to host a donation drive in your community.

This engaging storytelling event for children will feature award-winning storyteller, Willa Brigham, who will share inspiring stories for youth. Includes hands-on craft activities for kids. Please bring a gently used children's book from your personal collection to donate to Read and Feed.

6:00 PM - 8:30 PM: Celebration Reimagining The Dream For Today's Generation

Join us for an evening of entertainment and enlightenment! The featured speaker is Dr. Harry L. White Jr. and Mistress of Ceremonies Min. Brandi Q Hancock.

Doors open to the lobby and food service begins at 5 p.m. with limited indoor seating for dining. The Sigma Rho Zeta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc. will collect winter hats, gloves, scarves, socks, and book bags for Reedy Creek Magnet Middle School students. When a thriving, top-ranked African American elementary school is threatened to be replaced by a new high school for the elite. A community coalition is formed to fight for the elementary school’s survival. A conversation with director Kevin Shaw will follow the screening.

Items requested: Hair products, feminine products, detergent, non-perishable foods & snacks (including: cereal & noodles), rolls of quarters (for the laundromat), kid’s drink packs, and kitchen utensils are highly appreciated.

Calling volunteers to join us for our MLK Dreamfest service opportunities in partnership with Spruce and Good Hope Farm.

In an effort to support food security in our region, volunteers are needed to help prepare our organic teaching farm for spring planting.

As part of this day of service, we ask that all volunteers bring at least one canned/nonperishable food item for donation to the local food pantry.
