Glendale 100: Metalsmith Matriarchs — Makers, Memory, and Reciprocity

Discover how Native women metalsmiths integrate indigenous knowledge, practice, and tradition into their craft on Sunday, April 23, from 2-3 PM at the Heroes Regional Park Library. Nanibaa Beck, a second generation Diné (Navajo) jeweler, will explore the styles of several metalsmiths to demonstrate the connection of Native artists to Arizona and beyond. This AZ Speaks program is co-sponsored by AZ Humanities.

Glendale 100: Arizona’s Vintage Signs — Lighting the Future

Explore vintage and neon signs in Arizona on Saturday, April 29, from 2-3 PM at the Velma Teague Library. Automobile travel throughout Arizona in the '40s, '50s and '60s brought thousands of travelers through the state. As the cars sped past, restaurants, motels, curio shops and gas stations needed large, bright signs to make an impression.

Emmy-nominated presenter Marshall Shore, “Arizona's Hip Historian,” will discuss the social significance and designers of these iconic signs and what efforts are afoot to save our signage history. This program is co-sponsored by AZ Humanities.

Glendale 100: An Afternoon Celebrating Marty Robbins

Join us at the Main Library as we honor Glendale native Marty Robbins, an American singer, songwriter, actor, multi-instrumentalist and NASCAR racing driver, on Sunday, April 30, from 2-4 PM. During a career which spanned from the late 1940s to the early 1980s, he was one of the most popular and successful country and western singers. Celebrate the life and music of this local legend with a talk by Andrew Means, the author of Some Memories: Growing Up with Marty Robbins as Remembered by His Twin Sister Mamie, followed by a tribute performance by musician Ronnie Hazlett.
