LINCOLN, NE – The Nebraska Democratic Party Women’s Caucus Chair Kris Kinzie issues the following statement after President Joe Biden’s announcement that the Equal Rights Amendment had been ratified by 38 states and is the law of the land:
“On Jan 17th, we give many thanks to President Biden for recognizing the Equal Rights Amendment as the 28th Amendment to the Constitution. It has been a 55-year journey for the ERA since being successfully introduced on the floor of the US House of Representatives, by Michigan Representative Martha Griffiths. It has been championed and supported by such trailblazers as US Representative Shirley Chisholm, Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Sandra Day O’Connor, First Lady Betty Ford, and activist Gloria Steinem. Although uncertain of the legality, as an advocate for women’s full participation in all levels of government and the Nebraska Democratic Party, the Nebraska Democratic Women’s Caucus is overjoyed and will celebrate the Biden/Harris Administration’s commitment to protecting women’s full equality.”
