Nebraska Democratic Party Statement on Republican Budget Resolution and Devastating Effects on Medicaid and Snap Recipients

LINCOLN, NE – The Nebraska Democratic Party Chair Jane Kleeb issues the following statement regarding Republicans voting on a budget resolution that would shift funds from Medicaid and SNAP to the most wealthy:

“House Republicans have an opportunity to protect this county’s most vulnerable today with a budget resolution vote. Instead of shifting funds from seniors, mothers, and veterans, we should be uplifting them and not fatting the ultra-wealthy and corporations that already yield significant power with the Trump Administration and across this nation. We have already seen what tax breaks have done with increasing financial inequity and significantly adding to our federal debt in 2017, but Republicans want round two. This time around, it will be more devastating. We call upon Republicans to do the job they were sent to do in Washington: protect our working families.”

Republicans are poised to vote on a plan that will strip access to health care and take food off the table of Americans’ tables. Despite promising to lower costs for everyday things, Republicans are doing the exact opposite – all to fund tax cuts for their billionaire buddies and wealthy corporations.

We are calling on Congressman Don Bacon to stand up for seniors, mothers, and working families in District 2 rather than to take orders from the Trump Administration and Republican leadership. In Nebraska, 120,000 of the most vulnerable citizens in our state will be at risk of losing access to Medicare. That means 41,000 on Medicaid and 23,383 SNAP recipients in District 2.

If Don Bacon votes for this budget, he will be leaving working families behind in Nebraska. Town halls across the nation have verified what we know: Americans are fed up with attacks on our personal data, mass firings, and potential slashing of Medicaid and SNAP. Congressman Bacon didn’t even bother holding an in-person town hall meeting to discuss this and hear concerns.

We deserve representatives who will actually fight for us – not vote against us. We need to find a handful of representatives who will cross the aisle to vote with us to ensure we protect our most vulnerable.
