Donald Trump’s Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the quiet part out loud yesterday when he explained how Donald Trump’s tax bill contains a “backdoor for privatizing Social Security.”
Scott Brown and Dan Innis, who are running for U.S. Senate, have made it clear that they stand in lockstep with the Trump administration’s efforts to gut Social Security.
Brown has dismissed Granite Staters' concerns about the Trump administration’s ongoing attempts to dismantle Social Security - from proposed local Social Security office closures to delays in Granite Staters receiving benefits - saying people “don't want their Social Security. They don't care about that.” When Innis ran for Congress, he also supported the privatization of Social Security.
More than 334,100 Granite Staters rely on Social Security, which also accounts for more than 50% of the family income for over 122,100 New Hampshire families. A new AARP survey also found that the vast majority of Americans – 95% of Republicans, 98% of Democrats, and 93% of Independents – consider Social Security vital to the financial security of all Americans.
Republicans like Brown and Innis are already facing scrutiny for their support of Trump’s budget bill, which makes the biggest cuts to health care in the nation’s history, will take away health care for more than 46,000 Granite Staters and threatens deep cuts to Medicare - all while adding trillions of dollars to the federal deficit and giving tax giveaways to billionaires and Big Pharma.
“It’s no coincidence that just a couple of weeks before the 90th anniversary of Social Security, Donald Trump’s Treasury Secretary admits that Republicans are moving full steam ahead with their scheme to privatize Social Security and go after our hard-earned benefits - and they have the full support of Republicans like Scott Brown and Dan Innis,” said NHDP Chair Ray Buckley.
