Hempstead said: “We are thrilled that David will join our Board. He brings to the Mansion a deep knowledge of arts and culture, a passion for history, and a longstanding commitment to our community. I am sure he will play a significant role in growing and enhancing this National Historic Landmark.”
Heuvelman has had a multifaceted career that started with a passion for the theater and a bachelor’s degree in Theatre Arts with a minor in Art from Carroll University in Waukesha, Wisconsin. He then earned a Master of Fine Arts degree from The University of Alabama/ Alabama Shakespeare Festival Professional Actor Training Program, which led to a successful career with regional theaters.
In Montgomery, Alabama he studied Shakespeare and classical acting and performed in over 20 productions. David’s pursuit of a career in the theater brought him to New York City but he spent most of his time on the road performing at such venues as the Repertory Theatre of St. Louis, Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park, and The Pioneer Theatre in Salt Lake City.
David also owned and ran a scenic fabrication studio in New York called Gest Scenic Creations from 2004 to 2009. After moving to Norwalk, CT, he worked with Music Theatre of Connecticut as their resident designer and production manager. When the pandemic collapsed the event industry, Heuvelman transitioned into a new career and in May 2024, he graduated from Quinnipiac University School of Law with a JD degree, and now plans to make a difference in the areas of Special Education law and juvenile justice. Currently, he works for Keller Law in Norwalk, CT focusing on special education law and advocacy. His dedication to public service is also evident in his two-term service on the Norwalk Common Council, where he represented District A from 2019 to 2023.
