This August, our Busy Children's Room Turns 1 Year Old!

The beautifully renovated and expanded Children's Room, made possible through ARPA funding and donor support, opened to the community on August 4, 2022. One year later, the foot and stroller traffic remains just as strong and families continue to enjoy the comfortable seating areas, sunny activity/play space and large program room.

With our collection now on full display, borrowing of children's materials jumped significantly this year. You've borrowed 25% more children's fiction titles and 35% more nonfiction books. What an amazing job, readers!

Library Outreach: Nonantum Village Day

The Library Outreach Team is hitting the road again this summer and our next stop is Nonantum Village Day on August 6th from 5-8:00pm.

We'll be bringing our popular button maker, supplies for make-your-own bookmarks and be signing folks up for Library cards. See you there!

Library HVAC System Update

The Library's 32-year-old HVAC system is not operating to capacity and struggling at times to keep up with this season's hot and humid weather.  

The ventilation, fresh air, and heating systems are all fully functional. However, the chiller is supported by two cooling towers that cool the building, and one of those towers failed. So the single working cooling tower is struggling to keep up during extended periods of hot weather.

We are very thankful to the Mayor and City Council for already setting aside funding to replace the library chiller and cooling system. The project will be publicly bid in September and work will start as soon as the equipment can be secured from the manufacturer. The City is actively working to keep our building systems going until the planned rebuild can occur.

Back by Popular Demand: Adult Summer Reading Challenge

Last year hundreds of local residents participated in our first ever Adult Summer Reading Challenge, so we're thrilled to offer the program again this year.  

Our librarians are challenging you to read 5 books this summer across 5 different categories for a chance to win a gift card to a variety of amazing local restaurants. Reading challenge categories include, reading a book:

 - from a local New England author
 - under 200 pages
 - about a historical event or real person
 - a translated work or book by an international author
 - and, a wild card selection of your choosing (or recommended by us!).

The runs now through September 5th. Pick up your packet at the Circulation Desk or at any of our adult service desks on the first or second floor! Information is also available here.

Summer Reading Highlights for Kids, Tweens and Teens

"Find your Voice," the Summer Reading theme and this year's program will have kids, tweens and teens shrieking with joy as they read books, complete adventures and win prizes! The program runs until September 1.
