Government and Politics

OKLAHOMA CITY, OK — Oklahoma Democrats are rallying around House Minority Leader Cyndi Munson as she launches her campaign for Governor.

Munson, who made history as the first Asian-American woman elected to the Oklahoma Legislature, has spent her career breaking barriers and delivering results for working Oklahomans. Raised in Lawton, she is the daughter of a Vietnam War veteran and a South Korean immigrant. She and her sister were raised by their single father, who served in the U.S. Army and worked multiple jobs to support their family.

After graduating from Lawton Eisenhower High School, Munson became the first in her family to earn a college degree—thanks to the Oklahoma’s Promise scholarship program, which provides free in-state tuition to students from low-income families.

Before holding public office, she spent more than a decade in the nonprofit sector. Her work included empowering girls through leadership programs at the Girl Scouts of Western Oklahoma and helping children stay connected with incarcerated parents through shared reading initiatives.

Since her election in 2015, Munson has built a reputation for results-driven leadership, a deep commitment to public service, and a willingness to take on tough fights. At the State Capitol, she has consistently stood up for everyday Oklahomans.

Democrats across the state are rallying behind her campaign, inspired by her clear priorities:

  • Investing in public schools and raising teacher pay
  • Lowering healthcare costs
  • Delivering meaningful tax relief
  • Repealing the state’s abortion ban and restoring reproductive rights

“It is high time for Oklahoma to have a leader who understands the challenges and triumphs of everyday people. Education, healthcare, and economic outcomes were decidedly better under the leadership of Democratic governors,” said Oklahoma Democratic Party Chair Alicia Andrews. “Cyndi Munson has demonstrated a commitment to improving the lives of everyday Oklahomans. I look forward to Oklahomans having a true champion of the people on the campaign trail and eventually in the Governor's office.”

With the 2026 governor’s race beginning to take shape, Munson’s candidacy is already generating momentum among voters eager for new leadership and a better future for Oklahoma.
