Oklahomans Reject Republican Extremism, Elect Democrats In Key Races

Government and Politics

February 12, 2025

Oklahoma City, OK – Oklahomans are making their voices heard, rejecting Republican extremism and choosing leaders who prioritize real issues affecting everyday people. In a series of groundbreaking victories, Democratic candidates have secured key leadership positions across the state, demonstrating a growing demand for change and accountability.

In November, Tulsa made history by electing Monroe Nichols as its mayor—the city’s first Black mayor, chosen 103 years after the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre. Nichols' leadership and vision for a more inclusive and economically prosperous Tulsa resonated with voters, marking a significant shift in local politics.

Last night, Bethany followed suit, electing Amanda Sandoval, a Democrat, as mayor. Her victory underscores the momentum of Oklahoma Democrats, who are committed to ensuring access to healthcare, common-sense education policies, economic opportunity, and transparent governance. Additionally, in Norman, voters rejected the incumbent Republican mayor in favor of an unaffiliated candidate, further signaling that Oklahomans are demanding leadership that puts people over party loyalty.

For more than two decades, the Republican supermajority has failed Oklahoma, leading to embarrassing outcomes in key measurements of governance, including healthcare access, education funding, and economic development. But these recent victories prove that change is on the horizon. Oklahomans are ready to free themselves from the Republican stranglehold that has hindered progress and prosperity.

“The people of Oklahoma are sending a clear message: they want leaders who will fight for their everyday needs, not partisan extremism,” said Alicia Andrews, Chair of the Oklahoma Democratic Party. “These victories show that when given a choice, voters will support candidates who prioritize strong communities, thriving schools, and a government that works for everyone.”

The Oklahoma Democratic Party remains committed to building on this momentum, ensuring that every Oklahoman has a voice in shaping the future of our state. As more communities recognize the failures of Republican leadership, the tide is turning toward a brighter, more equitable Oklahoma.
