Our 22nd original Musical - Más Que Pantalones - is inspired by the life of Luisa Capetillo - labor union leader, activist, writer, anarchist, and spiritist - who tirelessly defended the rights of women and poor agricultural workers. Despite her important contributions in the early 20th century as a passionate labor movement leader, she is most popularly remembered as the 1st woman in Puerto Rico to wear pants.
Based in oral and documented history, this historical fiction is written in English, Spanish, and Taino. Set in the mid 1970s and circa 1917, it honors early 20th century female labor union leaders who fought for the rights of women and laborers and opened the doors to feminism in Puerto Rico! Traditions inherited from our Boricua Taino ancestors are also included!
The original script, music, and choreographies by Tekina-eirú Maynard feature original Jibaro, Salon (Vals & Mazurka), Plena, Bomba, and Taino music. Special Guest Rupert Reyes - celebrated Latino playwright and actor, and director - joins our cast of actors, dancers, musicians, and Cocobalé - STICKS & MACHETE FIGHTERS - to bring history to life!
This musical was recorded in front of a live audience on December 14 & 15 at the Huston-Tillotson University, King-Seabrook Chapel in Austin, TX 78702.
