10am - 1pm: Painting Water & Reflections in Oil with Dustin
Location: Moab Arts, 111 E 100 N, Moab, UT 84532, USA
Come learn the basics of painting water and reflections in oil paint. We will paint an image from the Moab area involving water and reflections. The class will focus on using a collection of shapes to create a realistic image. We will use a limited color palette.

Dustin Hardgrove discovered art practice at nearly 30 years old. Art appeared as a new and appropriate avenue to explore ideas of nature, environmental devastation, existence and resistance. Dustin focuses on on site outdoor painting and studio figure painting in a landscape. They are a working class artist whose creative process has blossomed in the free hours aside from labor as a fine carpenter. The ethics of hard work, project completion, and fine crafsmanship have all transferred into their practice as a studio and outdoor painter. Dustin’s art journey began with classes at the Art Students League of Denver and were mentored by notable artists Kevin Wechback, Ron Hicks and Clyde Steadman.

11am- 1pm: Water(color)ways: Travel Journaling in Ink and Wash with Jen
Location: Moab Arts, 111 E 100 N, Moab, UT 84532, USA

This workshop is sold out, please reach out to Moab Arts Staff at [email protected] or 435-259-6272 to be added to the waitlist.

Class Description: In this class, we’ll do some warm up “exercises” with ink and wash, to help you develop your unique style.  Do you prefer to ink-in more detail and paint less, or will you minimize your line work and let the watercolors tell the story?  Then we’ll start capturing some memories of the day as we (weather-dependent) venture out together.  I hope the class will inspire you to take up ink and wash visual journaling as a way to preserve special moments and feed your creativity one small page at a time.

All materials provided, students will receive a travel sized drawing pad, paint container, brush and pen to take home at the end of the class.

Artist Statement:  I’m a retired Air Force officer and scientist, and I’ve relished having more time and new opportunities to challenge the creative part of my brain. I’ve tried several kinds of art media and, though I love the portability of watercolors, the scientist in me still craves details.  Ink and wash was the solution!  Working in the small format of a journal keeps the process from being too daunting, and creating the journal allows me to really connect with what I see.  When I’m not traveling, I still capture special memories in my visual journal because, for me, it’s way more fun than writing!

1pm - 4pm: Wet Felting Basics  with Rosie
Location: Moab Arts, 111 E 100 N, Moab, UT 84532, USA
Workshop Description: Explore the ancient tradition of turning fiber into fabric. In this workshop you will learn a brief history of felt making and get hands-on experience with the ancient art. We will felt a ball (acorn) in addition to learning to felt and full a swatch. Witness the magical steps that, together, turn wool and silk fibers into a beautiful piece of felt fabric.

2pm - 5pm: Making Ink with Soot with Jess
Location: Moab Arts, 111 E 100 N, Moab, UT 84532, USA
Workshop Description: For as long as people have been around, people have been using materials from their environment as pigments for crafty projects. In this class we’ll use tea light candles to generate soot for use as pigment in a traditional water-based carbon black ink. This ink can be used for writing, drawing, or painting. After making the ink, we’ll have pens and brushes available to experiment with different techniques and recipes. Each student will take home a small container of fresh ink and a new knowledge of natural pigments!

2pm - 5pm: Bilingual Tie-Dye Workshop
Taller de Atado y Teñido en Español: with Thomas Crumrine & Joanna Oronato
Location: Moab Arts, 111 E 100 N, Moab, UT 84532, USA
Workshop Description:
Learn how to tie-dye using the low water immersion technique. With this technique you don’t have to wait for days to see your cool new t-shirt! The whole process takes an hour and a half. We will have a small talk on the history of dyeing fabrics, materials we use, and different techniques for tying and dying. Afterwards we will tie, dye and washout a t-shirt that you can take home with you. All materials are provided, but students are welcome to bring their own shirts/bags/other fabirc to Tie Dye! It MUST be 100% cotton or 100% linen.  This class is drop-in style so come anytime between 2 and 4pm to make a shirt!
