Tulsa, OK – The Oklahoma Democratic Party is proud to announce that Representative Amanda Swope (D-Tulsa) has been appointed as Tulsa’s first Director of Tribal Policy and Partnerships. This historic role, created by Mayor Monroe Nichols, is a key step in strengthening Tulsa’s relationships with tribal nations and addressing critical jurisdictional issues. Amanda will officially begin her new role on January 29, 2025.
A Citizen of the Muscogee Nation and of Osage descent, Amanda brings unparalleled experience and perspective to this position. Her extensive background includes serving in the Legislature since 2022 and chairing the Tulsa County Democratic Party from 2019 to 2022 as its first tribal citizen leader. She has also worked within tribal government, equipping her with the skills to foster collaboration and progress.
Amanda’s appointment highlights the importance of electing Democrats in Oklahoma. Her leadership reflects the progress that is possible when inclusive values guide public policy. By electing more Democrats, we can continue building roads to collaboration and achieving meaningful progress for all Oklahomans.
“Public service runs in my family, and I’m honored to be asked by Mayor Nichols to serve Tulsa in this new way,” Amanda said. “Together, we will work to strengthen relationships with tribal nations and co-govern in a way that works for everyone.”
Mayor Nichols established the Director of Tribal Policy and Partnerships role as part of his commitment to co-governing with tribal nations whose reservations overlap with Tulsa. “Amanda’s leadership will be pivotal as we navigate complex jurisdictional challenges and continue to stand firmly on the side of tribal sovereignty,” Nichols said.
Amanda’s transition means she will step down from her HD 71 seat in the Oklahoma House of Representatives. A special election will be scheduled to fill the vacancy, giving Tulsa voters the opportunity to continue her legacy of strong Democratic leadership.
The Oklahoma Democratic Party congratulates Amanda on this groundbreaking achievement and looks forward to the positive impact she will have in her new role.
