More than 700,000 Iowans enrolled in Medicaid and Medicare will be impacted by higher prices

DES MOINES – On his first day in office, Donald Trump launched his anti-health care agenda making health care and affordable drugs even more out of reach for Iowans. This effort, which will raise costs for Iowans, is what Iowa Republicans like Senator Joni Ernst – who has voted to repeal the ACA – have been waiting for.

Trump’s first order of business as president yesterday included rescinding President Biden’s executive order that called for lowering prescription drug costs for people on Medicare or Medicaid. More than 163,000 Iowans were projected to save an average of $524 thanks to the Inflation Reduction Act’s $2,000 annual out-of-pocket cost cap.

The 18,000 Iowans on Medicare who use insulin saved $725 annually thanks to the $35 per month insulin cap.

Trump also doubled down on his promises to rip away affordable health care from millions Americans, after he was only one vote away from from ripping away the Affordable Care Act, which saved more than 72,000 Iowans average of $569 on monthly health insurance premiums.

“Donald Trump’s ‘concepts’ of a health care plan is turning into actual hardship for Iowans who will be forced to give up their health insurance plans due to increasing costs, and for those who can no longer afford their prescription drugs. He and Joni Ernst – who has voted to repeal the ACA – are already negatively affecting pocketbooks and threatening their ability to stay healthy,” said IDP Chair Rita Hart. “Iowans are already dealing with high prices and this is only going to make it worse.”
