Round Up: Judge Susan Crawford Calls Out Backlog Brad Schimel

Government and Politics

MADISON, Wis. — On Thursday, Judge Susan Crawford held a press conference in Green Bay to call out Brad Schimel failing survivors of sexual assault when he let a backlog of over 6,000 rape kits sit untested for over two years as Wisconsin attorney general.

Brad Schimel sat on as his hands as justice was denied for countless victims of sexual assault while predators roamed freely. Backlog Brad continues to hide from his record of putting Wisconsinites’ safety at risk. Sexual assault survivors deserve swift and fair justice that Brad Schimel denied them, and Wisconsin deserves better than Brad Schimel on our Supreme Court.

See more coverage below:

Green Bay Press Gazette“In a short media-only news conference at Hinterland Brewery, the Dane County judge reiterated the leading point from her campaign’s recent TV ad that only nine out of over 6,000 rape kits were tested in the two years that began Schimel’s tenure as attorney general, citing a 2017 story from the Green Bay Press-Gazette. She pressed further in her Thursday remarks to say that Schimel in 2017 had ‘lied about the progress made back then,’ referring to how Schimel had initially said ‘a few hundred’ kits had been tested during the unveiling of a sexual assault support program. Two days later, the Press-Gazette reported only nine had been. […] Schimel’s lack of urgency, Crawford concluded, resulted in a line used among prosecutors coming true for sexual assault survivors: ‘Justice delayed is justice denied,’ she said.

WFRV Local 5: “Wisconsin Democratic supreme court candidate Susan Crawford was in Green Bay today calling out her Republican challenger Brad Schimel for letting 6,000 assault kits sit for over 2 years. She says that as attorney general, Schimel only tested 9 kits in his first 2 years in office. ‘This is a clear pattern of an extreme and shady politician who cannot be trusted to keep our loved ones and our community safe. I’ve dedicated my career to protecting our communities.’”

WBAY Action 2 News“Susan Crawford made a stop at Hinterland Brewery today in Green Bay calling out opponent Brad Schimel. She said he let 6,000 sexual assault kits go on tested for more than two years during his time as state attorney general. Both Crawford and Schimel are candidates for Wisconsin Supreme Court. Today in Green Bay, Crawford doubled down in her promise to bring those accused to justice saying while Schimel ‘dragged his feet, predators remained on the streets.’ ‘Brad Schimel even lied about the lack of progress back then, claiming that hundreds had been tested only only for his staff to have to correct him a few days later and confirm that only nine kits had been tested.’
