SD House Approves Bill to Increase Childcare Workforce

PIERRE, SD -- Wednesday, the South Dakota House of Representatives advanced HB 1132, legislation that will help increase our childcare workforce. The bill proposes that childcare workers employed at a licensed facility and are at or below 300% of the federal poverty level are eligible for childcare assistance.

This will help recruit and retain workers who often leave the field when they have their own children because childcare is too expensive. Many facilities have the capacity to hold more kids but can’t because they lack the workers. This bill addresses staffing shortages by making childcare more affordable for employees. That will open more spots for families and their children.

"Childcare providers across our state are struggling—not because they lack space, but because they don’t have enough staff," said Minority Leader Rep. Erin Healy, the prime sponsor of the bill. "By expanding access to childcare assistance, we are taking a real step toward strengthening the workforce, keeping centers open, and ensuring families have access to the care they need."

"Quality childcare is incredibly important for families. It helps parents go to work and gives kids a strong start in life. But low pay and high childcare costs are making it hard for workers to stay in their jobs, leading to a shortage of providers."

"This is the first time in at least a decade we have been able to pass a childcare bill in committee and on the floor. I'm proud of the House for recognizing this need."

"If you are someone who has had a difficult time finding childcare or have left the childcare workforce, please contact your Senators and share your story."
